The "Mark My Words" Thread

Mine is more pessimistic, and I hope I'm wrong on most counts, but:

AOB first coach sacked in 2023 after Knights miss the 8.
Young to sign with Raiders or Roosters.
Hastings relegated to NSW Cup before end of year.
Brailey another leg injury with long recovery period.
Ponga leads the team in try assists. Mapapalangi supplants Best in starting lineup and leading tryscorer.

Saifiti bros to have a much improved year.

Hastings to be an appreciated part of the team. And our halves to be acknowledged as a permanent solution for the club for the medium to long term.

Knights to be bottom 8 but towards 8th.

Our backs will have a big year.

However,

If our attack isn't considerably improved in a fundamental way AOB will be sacked because we'll still suck despite having an almost entirely new spine from last year.

- Bailey Hodgson and Lachlan Fitzgibbon to both leave the Knights at the end of the season

AOB sacked after the first six rounds as he fails to get a win
Ponga suffers a season ending injury
We name Michael Hagan as our new coach but he can only get two wins for the rest of the season as we get the spoon
Dom Young signs with the Storm for 2023
NRL gets sick of our struggles and withdraws our license
McDonald Jones Stadium suffers a particularly wet year and begins to sink
Salary cap investigators discover we were well over the cap in 1997 and 2001 and our premierships are stripped
The earth's orbit deteriorates and we are all sucked into the sun and suffer painful hideous deaths

At least you ended on a note of optimism I guess

This is what will actually happen. We have our best preseason ever. Boys have never been fitter.

We win round 1 like we have for the last 100 years, giving us false hope.

At some stage Brailey Is injured for the remainder of the season.

AOB states we’ve concentrated on either attack or defence too much.

Ponga tears up SOO. Strings 3 superstar performances for us with a handful of try assists.

We finish 12th -14th. Dragging us all along thinking we can somehow scrape into the 8 until the last 2 rounds.

That’s what will happen.

I actually think this sounds pretty close to the mark.

- Hunt to start on the wing in round 1 over Marzhew or Tuala.

- Best to get through most of the season unscathed and score between 10-15 tries

- We'll be somewhere in the top 6 by round 10, only to fall apart and finish 10th-12th by the end of the season

- Saifiti Bros to kill it up until about Origin time where they both fall back into their lazy ways

- Dylan Lucas to debut at some point during the season

- Ponga to miss Origin

O'Brien is sacked mid season and Hasler is signed as head coach.
Hastings ruffles feathers in playing group and coaching staff and is released at the end of the season.
Knights collect wooden spoon and the biggest clean out in Nrl history begins, hopefully starting with Gardiner and Zammit.

Got this idea from the Bulldogs forum, thought it might be a good idea for a new sort of centralized thread for any bold predictions, could be a bit of fun to look back on at the end of the season or beyond to see who was on the money or who was horribly wrong.

I'll start off with some predictions

- Jacob to play 20+ matches this year & give Dan a run for his money

- Tuala to announce himself this season as a strike weapon in attack
Tuzla prediction would be terrific-all he has to do now is learn to tackle.

Cool idea, I'll have a go:

Saulo to play 12+ games in first grade and start to nail down a spot

Simi Sasagi will make his first grade debut as a 14 when Watson is required elsewhere at some point

Our biggest loss will be by less than 12 points

Love the idea of our biggest loss will be by 12 points or less!

Alright since people are starting to make predictions again for the year ahead, it's time to wake from my coma and revisit some of the predictions from last year. Bold predictions are the name of the game, either revel in my praise, or wallow in embarrassment.

- Clifford has some second year syndrome growing problems (I hope not)

- Jacob Saifiti to play Game 3 of Origin

Visiting my predictions first off, these were two bold but good calls. At this point of the year, it was pretty hard to believe Cliffo's form would drop off a cliff and quite far fetched to think Jake Saifiti would play Origin this year.

At least 1 guy we've never heard of is training with reserve grade now and will debut this year.

Not exactly right, but I reckon this is close enough. We had Leo Thompson signed at this point, but he was only a few months removed from being someone nobody in the rugby league world had heard of outside of Canberra fans. And he did such a good job that he's now well in the mix for a top 17 spot.

Cowboys to finish above the Knights.

Have to give the man his praise. You called it. And considering a 15th place finish the previous year, this was in fact a bold call.

Alot of mockery around this one but I can actually see it happening.

NQL have a tonne of talent in the forwards, plus some good young stars coming through in Asi and Hamiso, if they can get their halves firing I think they might actually be one of the surprise packages this season, provided they stay injury free and put the Valentine Holmes at fullback rubbish in the dumpster where it belongs.

Absolutely spot on.

I mean it’s substantially the same pack that’s carried them to four bottom 4 seasons in a row. The likes of Nanai and Luki look like nice talents but it’s a big ask to expect players so young to make a big difference, and Luki may not even be there come round 1.

Taumalolo isn’t the clear best forward in the NRL anymore and even if he was, they still have the same problems: too many old guys, too many guys with poor defensive mobility, too many guys prone to very poor defensive and handling errors. As brilliant as he’s been, they were still a losing team over the last years of his prime, and now he’s showing clear signs of decline.

Everyone looks at their roster as being good on paper but held back by coaching, but they’ve been so bad for so long… maybe it isn’t actually that good on paper? Maybe a lot of their players aren’t terribly good?

I mean, some of them were good. They play for us now 😂

In short, if you’re tipping them above us, then you’re tipping us to finish no higher than 15th.

Our young forwards are on another level compared to the rest of the comp as a group. Nanai is on a level of his own for his age, he has it all and could easily fill in at centre with his mobility and athleticism. Luki, Neame, Cotter and Gilbert form a very good core with the last 2 hopefully getting through the season injury free. Cotter is my favourite cowboy right now. His work goes severely unnoticed to most but he is our Murray/Radley. So happy we have him signed until 2026 I believe.

I know this was already all brought up in the thread after some classic Cowboyman deep dive investigating, but have to revisit and do the name and shame, Cowboyman was very confident in his young forwards and ended up being exactly right.

We will not get another major injury @ hooker until 2025

You can only laugh. Brailey literally goes down again with severe season derailing injury. This is proof we live in a simulation.

* Knights NRLW team to make the Grand Final in their inaugural year
* Dane Gagai to continue his form from South’s and to be first picked in the QLd origin squad

We could all see the potential in the NRLW squad so not a huge call, but still deserves to be highlighted. Not so successful with the Gags call though.

- South Sydney & Manly slide on the NRL ladder, with the Knights taking advantage and pushing for a top four spot… ultimately missing out by 2 points due to a loss in round 25, finishing 5th.

The Knights let you down once again, but a solid call on Souths and Manly. Both top 4 sides in 2021, with Souths sliding down the 8 and Manly sliding right out completely.

- Half the forum (myself included) with be downtrodden and suicidal 15 minutes into the 1st game against the Chooks.

The one and only wrist slitting call on the entire forum where we can be like "HA! I told you so, the Knights are awesome". That game might have been the best time period for the club all year.

Jsaf - NSW origin debut
Dom Young - Makes a wing spot his own, knights top try scorer.

Jacob Saifiti finally gets an Origin call up.

Dom comes in and brains it

Couple more JSaf calls, also good calls on Dom. We see Dom as an integral part of the team now, but at this point of the year, he was still a reserve grade nobody.

- Jake Clifford's form making him a no brainer for origin 3 with QLD 2-0 down and looking for some new blood

Absolutely love the boldness, but this one has to be revisited. Cliffo had the world at his feet, but his season literally almost couldn't have gone any worse.

- angry Klemmer will return

This was right at times during the year, maybe not for our benefit though, poor Klem's anger seemed to be the catalyst for him getting moved on from the club.

- we sign luke brooks, mid season

Well, god damn we got pretty darn close! Thankfully that fever dream can be put to rest forever now. I can literally picture it, he signs and we all get so much false hope that he just needed a fresh start, Joey will save him, he then proceeds to not be the dominant halfback we're looking for, just sits behind Ponga, unsure of his role and just lets everyone down while robbing the Knights of half a million annually on a multi year contract and we're left not knowing what to do next.

Clune will become a fan favourite after his first few games but will battle to maintain consistency.

Well you nailed this. After the first few games we were practically calling him our saviour and then he fell off a cliff with the rest of them.

Knights to run in the bottom 8. No doubt injuries will be a factor. Defensively weaker than 2021. But with a wholesale reinvention of our attack we resemble the Knights of old with some eyes up footy.

Ponga to have a big season. He will leave imo due largely to Watson's departure, something i suspect he is bitter about. An unforgivable error on O'Brien's part that will lead to O'Brien's sacking at seasons end once Ponga signs elsewhere. Not enough criticism was levelled at O'Brien for mishandling Watson's contract negotiations imo, given how critical his re-signing was to Pongas future at the club. Very dumb, wreckless and disappointing to see Watson leave. It is was an enormous error.

Wreckless stuff, all considered. If Ponga leaves the club is in big trouble. Watson was one of the lower structural blocks in the jenger tower it seems. Why even risk that?

As for Ponga, sure it doesn't help, but I don't think it really affects him unless he were to go to the Roosters. Him and his family are settled here, they know the club inside and out. He's not leaving because he lost a mate. It'll be about money or like Watson, losing faith in the cause.

Well you stuck your head out as not having much confidence in the Knights in 2022 and you were absolutely right in the end. Thankfully though your prediction of how important Watson's departure would be to Ponga's decision was wrong. What a circus that was for a few months on here. Ponga finally let us rest and committed to the club for 5 years.

Cameron Ciraldo to replace OB linking back up with knowles & brennan

This was honestly a decent call in my mind even though it didn't eventuate. The rumours did start but Ciraldo ultimately became a Bulldog. If Wests were a little bit more impatient though, he may very well be here.

Ponga-pogo said:
Flanagan has a win record of 44% and 64% in second stint which equals 54% AOB has a win record of 50%.

So based on statistics he ain't that much better.

That’s nice.

Premierships 1-0

Uhhh, this is actually wrong, O'Brien was involved in four Grand Finals man, one of the most successful coaches involved in the game right now..🤓

I'm not death riding OB by any means. I'm happy with what he has done here so far.

But.

He hasn't done very much with our squad in the attitude department and getting the team to believe they can win any game, and getting the squad up for every game. Not all of that is his fault alone, but a coach needs to be able to get the team playing for him and all pulling in the same direction. We have had the same core of players for a while now, fairly set pack, Ponga as our main attacking weapon and you can see some improvement in attitude. Is that his influence or just the squad maturing on it's own though?

Defence has been ordinary. Defence is all about attitude.
Attack also fairly ordinary.

He gets a pass so far, but only because of where we have come from before he got here.

Have to highlight the early critique of O'Brien's skills as a coach. The signs were there, but still a bold call considering at this time we were coming off 2 finals appearances in a row.

Clifford to take his game to a another level this year and be close to dally m halfback

Mat Croker to be in the starting 17 by end of the season

Klemmer to leave at the end of the season

You already pointed these out Celticman, but accept another praise. Great calls on Croker and Klemmer. And a clanger of a call with Clifford. The dichotomy of man.

Fox sites bold predictions has us 2-6 to start the season, at which point Ponga will announce he is leaving and we will go on to get the spoon

Definitely possible, we have a brutal first third of the season, a few injuries and we will struggle badly.

We won't get the spoon though, there are too many other bad teams.

Well Fox got the 2-6 start to the season spot on. Their other predictions were just sticking the boot in though. 🤣

And god damn Slots, we got pretty close. Way closer than I thought was possible.

Where did you see that as I’m sure on MMM radio he has the Cowboys to come last in his predictions.

also tipping broncos to make the 8…what a flog

Embarrassing one for MG, but Broncos was a great call for most of the year, then they choked.

Someone been smoking to much if they think the Eels will win it all this year. I see them at breaking point under Brad Arthur. Bad start to the season and it will spiral out of control quickly I feel.

It always shocks me to think about how long the Eels have stuck strong to Arthur. Like not hating, he's made the finals the last 3 years, but he's been there 8 seasons now, with a couple years out of the 8 and a wooden spoon thrown in there too looking at the stats. I think most clubs would have moved in a different direction by now having not jagged a comp yet in those 8 years. They'll definitely be wanting to get to that grand final pretty soon otherwise it could be trouble for him.

So close for Parra, within 80 minutes of a premiership, but yet still seem so far off. A GF buys Arthur more time but the pressure will be on after losing a few good stalwarts.

Panthers miss top 4
Ponga signs with Panthers

A couple wacky calls, but appreciate the boldness.

Here’s a funky one.

Jake Clifford double digits tries scored.

Loved this call at the time. I still believe it happened in some alternate universe. I reckon some scientists messed around with something too much at the Large Hadron Collider facility early last year and shifted us into a new evil timeline where Clifford sucks.

Like yeah sorry for not responding in great detail but you didn’t really make a serious argument, so I didn’t feel the need to give a serious response. As usual though you needle and needle and needle until you get me to respond. And here I am wasting more of my precious time on this planet on you. FFS.

Not a prediction but god you and Cowboyman were too good together, so much sexual tension.

Right so here are my early bold predictions for 2023:

- Daniel Saifiti will have his biggest year yet. Klemmer is a huge loss, but now there is no one ahead of Daniel in the pecking order when it comes to calling for the ball. He will get the lion's share now out of the forwards and be that pack leader.

- Bradman Best will join a new side mid-season. Whether he joins a successful club or a crappy club, will determine whether he becomes the next superstar centre, or the next James Roberts.

- Jayden Brailey plays every single game for us this year.

- Dom Young unfortunately decides to leave for a higher performing club. I reckon he's quite aspirational and will strive to be in the best spot career wise which he won't see at the Knights.

- Myles Martin will debut, don't know anything about the kid, but his name has gotten a fair bit of media in the last few years. Just sounds like one of those highly thought of forwards that get a debut at 18/19 years of age.

- Krystian Mapapalangi will secure a spot in the team and be our next exciting young prospect.

- Greg Marzhew will become an instant fan favourite, breaking tackles left right and centre.

- O'Brien's career is saved for at least another year as we improve after moving Ponga to five-eigth.

- Ponga cracks the top 10 for try assists. Still plays fullback for QLD despite playing at 6 for us.

- This will be Lachie Fitz' final year at the club, promised a lot early, but his first-grade career fizzles out and he signs for a Real NRL club for 2024.

- Knights to finish 7th.

- The NRLW girls go back to back. Core of the squad largely unchanged, after the confidence of winning a comp and a season's worth of experience together under the belt, the girls just look a class above the rest of the comp now.

I'm happy with that. Now who else has a prediction? The more outrageous the better.

From this I’ve learned that I’m very clear eyed on teams I’m neutral towards (Souths, Manly), totally addled re: teams I love (Knights) and hate (Cowboys). Will try to mentally pretend I don’t care about the latter two when I do predictions this time.

Don’t reference me, CBM and “sexual tension” in the same sentence ever again.

- Parramatta and Cronulla to be big sliders, Parra miss the 8 altogether.

- Penrith don’t get the minor premiership but they grind it out come finals time and become the first team in the NRL era to win 3 titles in a row.

- North Queensland wins the minor premiership.

- Roosters are the beaten grand finalists.

- Melbourne have one of their worst ever seasons under Bellamy, delivering a pathetic, embarrassing 14 wins and 10 losses.

- Warriors & Titans duke it out for the spoon.

- Holbrook is the first coach fired. Only 2 years too late 😂

- The Mighty Knights win the comp. NRLW obviously…

Great summary!!! :)

(But unfortunately I predict your 2023 prediction summary will be very disappointing and garner several sad and angry post emoji reactions.)
