The "Mark My Words" Thread

You really don't have anything better to do with your time huh
I really don’t when out on site and doing nothing no.
I’m just riding high on the massive compliment he’s paid me. Because I said in February that I thought the Cowboys roster had been overrated by many punters in previous years (including myself), this apparently “disproves” any notion that their roster might actually be one of the more talented ones going around after all. I honestly didn’t think he respected my opinion that much. 😂
That’s really not what you were saying though was it. The post was littered with little jabs and arrogance.

“I mean it’s substantially the same pack that’s carried them to four bottom 4 seasons in a row. The likes of Nanai and Luki look like nice talents but it’s a big ask to expect players so young to make a big difference, and Luki may not even be there come round 1.”

Now it seems someone was banking on Luki being a Knight like someone claimed to have inside info on, on this forum. He subsequently hasn’t been seen since.

“Taumalolo isn’t the clear best forward in the NRL anymore and even if he was, they still have the same problems: too many old guys, too many guys with poor defensive mobility, too many guys prone to very poor defensive and handling errors. As brilliant as he’s been, they were still a losing team over the last years of his prime, and now he’s showing clear signs of decline.”

Too many old guys yet we are one of the youngest sides in the comp with largely the same squad that finished last season plus the recruits of Chaddy and Hiku.

Taumalolo showing clear signs of decline… 😂

Meanwhile we have the second best defence of the season and by far the best 2nd half record of any team.

“Everyone looks at their roster as being good on paper but held back by coaching, but they’ve been so bad for so long… maybe it isn’t actually that good on paper? Maybe a lot of their players aren’t terribly good?”

A clear jab at saying they just aren’t any good in your opinion no matter what way you try and spin it.

“I mean, some of them were good. They play for us now 😂

Yikes this hasn’t aged well. Ponga… severely overpayed that rarely shows up. More interested in strawberry milkshakes and bathroom dates with Mann. Clifford… already being rumoured as shopped around to the SL. You had him as your display picture after 2 games this season and jumped off the bandwagon very quickly. Tuala… everyone’s punching bag on here. Was no doubt banking on Luki and or Nanai being another one.

“In short, if you’re tipping them above us, then you’re tipping us to finish no higher than 15th.”

The one and only part of this post you were close to having anything correct. Knights being 2 points off on for and against from finishing 15th. Insinuating the Cowboys could finish no higher then 14th was well way off to say the least.

Now that’s killed 10 minutes of the day just another 9 more hours until end of shift.

No I just literally don’t understand why you think any of it is even relevant. Yes, I had some takes on the Cowboys squad at the start of the year which turned out to be wrong. After years of underperformance I concluded that maybe the players weren’t as good as I thought.

Then what happened is that the passage of time occurred as it always does, a lot of the Cowboys young players came along quicker than I thought they would, Taumalolo turned back the clock + added extra dimensions to his game (and I’m happy for him, have long been a fan of his) so I… changed my mind. I know, crazy idea, but you’re allowed to have your opinion be changed.

The opinion I’ve expressed on the Cowboys having much more talent and strike power is based on watching them *this year*. Taumalolo, Cotter, Nanai, Holmes, Drinkwater et al bring a lot more physical dominance/strike than the equivalent players at the Sharks, in my opinion. I’ve made my arguments as to why, your counter-argument is just “but that’s not what you were saying at the start of the year was it??? ☕😏”.

So? What difference does that make?

Like yeah sorry for not responding in great detail but you didn’t really make a serious argument, so I didn’t feel the need to give a serious response. As usual though you needle and needle and needle until you get me to respond. And here I am wasting more of my precious time on this planet on you. FFS.

I don’t know whether you think there’s a referee awarding you points or something on here, but there’s not mate. You don’t need to be pot committed to a take and never change your mind on it. Unless you’re only on here to be totally adversarial.

But as you keep saying, that’s not you. I’m sure you believe that too 😂.

That must of been hard for you to admit you’re wrong. Well done.

It’s relevant because you tried to say in a different thread that the Sharks have a weaker squad then the Cowboys when literally no one was thinking that at the start of the year yourself included as shown above.

The difference it makes is it shows that Payten has done a tremendous job in improving his players and getting several young players into origin this year when no one would of expected to see the likes of Gilbert, Dearden, Taulagi, and Cotter feature.

Fitzgibbon hasn’t been able to elevate his players as much as what Payten has done.

It really shouldn’t come as a surprise as we all saw what Payten was starting to do with that rabble across the ditch. They were starting to look like an actual NRL side in under half a season he was in charge there.

A lot of it is luck though, like Drinkwater improved the attack massively and Payten only played him at fullback when forced. Payten deserves credit for sticking with what worked but he didn’t think that was the best option coming into pre-season.

I’ve said elsewhere that the improvement this year is exaggerated by the growing pains of his first year eg not knowing what to do with Val for ages, a lot of guys taking a while to buy in, etc. For me Fitz got a lot of improvement straight out the gate, so that impressed me more personally.

It’s not like I think Payten is a bad coach, I have him as the clear second this year and I think it’s line ball between him and Fitz. This debate only seems to continue to rage on because you think it’s this massive insult and a ridiculous notion to suggest Craig Fitzgibbon deserves any praise at all.

Like a lot of my take is based on stuff like agreeing with you that Nicho Hynes isn’t that good of a player, that he’s made to look better than he is by how Fitzgibbon sets up the team. I think he had a clear idea of how he wanted them to play from the jump and I think they outperformed how good they should be as a team by the most.

So I dunno… just live with it I guess? I don’t know what else to say at this point.

I recently heard that Mark and Larry Tuafua are uncles of Payne Haas.
I remember that in 2007 I was saying we'd have a great prop if we could put the motor of Mark Tuafua into the body of Larry Tuafua - and god-dammit, their sister was already on the case.

Yeah hence where the Woodberry connection comes from. Most of the family still live there. Mark runs the local newy touch rugby league with his wife and baz is a good mate of my brother. So i see them regularly. They are both still crazies.

pretty sure mark coached the woodberry warriors to the A grade GF in the hunter rugby league this season. larry was still playing for them only a few yrs ago aswell.

Everyone knows that any punch on with Dora Creek is always Dora Creek's fault, so I don't know why Larry was suspended.
Haha I did see the footage and it looked like an elbow to the throat so I can see why the reaction occured.
