2025 pre season thread

Brett Kimmorley might still be the highest earner in League history.
A 15 year NRL career where a lot of teams paid him big money all through the super league era.

Kimmorley was a great player but you're struggling bigtime if the last great halfback you produced retired 15 years ago.

Mullo was never a halfback despite the clubs best efforts of trying to force a square peg in a round hole, only played about a third of his career there.

Mullen was the only one of those to do anything of note at NRL level, and I'd say league-wide (so not just Knights fans) he's remembered more as an underachiever or disappointment rather than a great player. Regardless that's a depressing list if it's the 4 best since the mid90s.

What I would give to have a mullen in our team, cracking kicking game and great passer left or right.

Mullen spent years playing with a 6 on his jersey alongside Tyrone Roberts in the 7 jersey.

Mullen did almost all the tactical kicks, received the ball double the amount, got the majority of try assists etc.

By any measure, Mullen was our halfback and Roberts was a pretty low workrate 5/8, no matter what number they liked to wear.

Talking of Roberts, on paper he was one of our most successful halves, nearly 200 games across 11 years for 5 clubs, but the secret to his success was that he had such a low workrate in attack and defence that he hardly ever got injured.

Personally I'd put Tyrone Roberts ahead of the aforementioned Mullen, Walsh, Dureau and Lamb as our best locally-produced post-Joey halfback (Mullen was of course a much better five-eighth).

It's unfortunate we didn't stick with him instead of flying in Hodkinson. Bennett said as such at the time, I seem to remember.

I remember the 2013 finals match vs the Storm, he stood up massively and was one of, if not our best player in the win. Mullen had one of his worst games after a great season and seemed to be affected by the pressure quite badly.

The "best pre-season ever" article we have been waiting for.

Matt Croker and Greg Mazhew quoted as saying we are going for the premiership this year.

Croker says the new recruits are something special, but says the real driving force has been the young players who have all been training hard from October (formal training didn't start till November) and says they set a very high bar and the older guys have lifted to match them.

"It's been a different sort of pre-season compared to most ... but the bar was set pretty high with how some of the younger guys come back. They set the bar high for us older boys and I think we've carried on with that. Everyone is in good nick, everyone is pretty healthy - there's not many injuries going about."

Surely they realise they say this every year…
