2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

AOB cannot be allowed to continue signing short term, half-baked solutions for the express purpose of buying himself just enough success to avoid losing his job.

This club needs to be honest about what is happening right now--the medium-long term success of the club is being sacrificed for unlikely short term gains

Would only consider Croft if he could replicate a couple of strong SL seasons in a row like Hastings did, even though he was named at halfback in the dream team he's actually playing five-eighth with a genuine halfback alongside him and we have enough of those as is.

It's hard to work out how much NRL training Gamble has done. He has been in the Wests and Brisbane systems, but before this year it looks like he was a second tier player, so may not have been training with the top squad.
If the improvement he has shown this year is down to him doing full time training for the first time, he might have some more in him next year too.

Your post was from a tweet by Barry Toohey. What you did not include was that Toohey said it “Sounds manager-driven”

So I will wait to hear reports from the Knights that they are interested before jumping to conclusions.

It's an article tooheys guess on the matter means nothing

I dont think any signing is the doing of the coach alone. reality is in the short term we need an organising half and theres sweet FA available. the question is do you want a bloke whos delivered nothing on his touted potential for 10 years in brooks, or take a chance on a bloke who could do a job in the storm system but failed to deliver at the broncos who were a basket case at the time.

both are pretty uninspiring options to me but you would need to offer a long deal to get brooks you would think, where as with croft you could potentially dangle the NRL carrot at him and nab him on a 1 yr deal and look to the market for 2024.

Hard to see Croft up rooting and moving back to Aus for a 1 year deal only to potentially end up back there the following year.

This just out from Cameron Munster...

“(This decision) will be about where I can play my best footy and doing what is best for my family. That’s all it is. It’s not about money.”

“It’s about what my partner wants, it’s not about me anymore. It’s about helping her out if do want to have more kids. We’re weighing up the best fit for myself, but as a family as well.”

“I’ve put everything on the backburner at the moment. The last couple of weeks have been pretty heated negotiation-wise. I felt like it crept into my game a little bit.”

Knights recruitment team, please throw everything at this guy! The primary reason everyone dislikes him is that he is that bloody good. All other knights players would absolutely lift if he was here, guaranteed. Newcastle's a great place for a young family, just stay away from the Del.

Munster is a great player but he has said himself that he doesn't enjoy the pressure of leading a team around and prefers to play off the cuff.

Also where would it leave us with Ponga as i think he is better suited as a 5/8 then a fullback as his playing style is more that of a 5/8 currently then a fullback

I think as a club we first need to decide quickly, basically the decision should have already been made, where we see Ponga playing his best football, then start recruiting around that. If Ponga is moving to 5/8 then we should go after Munster to be our fullback

1 - Munster
2 - Young
3 - Best
4 - Mapapalangi
5 - Gagai
6 - Ponga
7 - Gamble

Still in need of a halfback though

I highly doubt Munster will be coming to Newcastle. Qld seems like where he will go, and I don't think we can fit him in the cap either.
