2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Crossland, French, Gamble and Dylan Lucas getting a top 30 deal (if true) makes 29 signed for 2023.

Going to need to move on about 3 or 4 to have any hope, but who is going to take them after this year...

Can only assume that they have some things in the works. Signing low value squad members now to have a crack at a few quality players that may become available.

Then again, it is Newcastle and maybe I'm giving them too much credit.

We have Dom Young for next year, but if he has a great WC for England his bidding price for 2025 will be 500k to get in the door, and we'll have won the lottery if we get him for that.
we have a chance to sign him up before the WC if we can get it done before he can take other offers on Nov 1, so we might get him cheaper - or take the risk that he has a terrible WC so we can get him a lot cheaper.

Would be good if we can move Crossland along to open up a spot in the top 30.

Yeah has been a good year for Dom
He was equal 1st for trys at the knights 13th in the NRL
1st for line breaks 15th in the NRL
2nd for tackle breaks 45th in the NRL
Equal 1st for intercepts equal 11th in the NRL

Imagine how good he would go if we had a decent team.

It’s kind of astounding how good both Dom and Edrick have gone in a poor team, usually the wingers depend more than any other position on their inside men to perform well. Really shows their quality and they’re probably kicking themselves that Eddie is leaving. Especially after Eddie missed all that time for us - if anything he’s playing career best footy now.

It would’ve been risky to re-sign Edrick, if he injures his foot again, which he nearly did a few times this season, he’d be forced into retirement.

Literally spot on.

Mann is a more effective half than Crossland. And Mann isn't even a half.
I’m still yet to hear anyone explain what discernible skill he actually brings to a team. It’s not playmaking, which seems pretty important for an alleged spine player. It’s not his ability to tear up a defensive line nor dominate in defence.

It’s the word that this club and fanbase glorifies to an embarrassing extent - the completely asinine “effort” tag given to predominantly local juniors who by all other metrics aren’t good enough to be playing first grade. In reality the vast majority of players across the comp play with effort every week, they just do so while also being good at other things so the bare minimum trait doesn't get talked about. Not in Newcastle. Here it gets you a section of fans perpetually blowing smoke up your *** and probably a player option on your brand new contract.

Maybe one day we’ll be kissed on the **** again and the next Andrew Johns will be born in the Hunter Valley. In the meantime it would be nice to have people in charge who are interested in building a winning team rather than pandering to the “hard-working locals” pipe dream BS. That’s what re-signing Phoenix Crossland after the season we just had epitomises to me, depth signing or not.

With Crosslands deal it could be a development deal like Hoy this year.
I think the wording was something like "we have come to a new agreement with Crossland".

Or I could be wrong and the Knights have signed him for 3 years on 1.5m. lol.
