2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Yeah I haven’t been impressed with Staggs in the halves. I feel like Herbie should in theory be good at fullback but given how many players Brisbane have cycled through at 1 without him ever getting a go there, maybe not?

Herbie Farnworth is the size of a big backrower. He isn't ever going to be a better fullback than a centre or wing. He hardly stands out at centre.

Size of a big backrower and in the top 5-6 fastest players in the comp, Turbo and Latrell are both even bigger and slower but are very good fullbacks. Not sure how you can say he doesn't stand out at centre, before getting injured he was a top 3 centre in the league this year - still has the most tries of any centre despite missing 5/17 rounds, there's daylight between him and our current centres (especially Gags).

He's super fit, hardworking and elusive so he has the tools to be a threat, he also came through the grades as a fullback hence why he's looking to play there. The big questionmark is his ballplaying which is often criticised, obviously necessary as a fullback but there's no reason he couldn't end up a more athletic version of Dylan Edwards by gradually developing a passing game.

He's been a bit unlucky in the sense that he was named there last season but Coates pulled out in the warmup and Brisbane had alfready worked out defending Niu in the front line wasn't feasible so Niu came in at fullback and Herbie shifted out wide. Similar story this pre-season as he was training at fullback but got covid so didn't play the trials.

There's a risk attached to being the club giving him a shot at fullback but if he really wants to play there perhaps the financial incentives required to get him here wouldn't be as high, with worst case being we end up with one of the best outside backs in the comp (not that we need outside backs but there's worse outcomes).

Kalyn to the halves is very far from a certainty though IMO, but I do believe it should be seriously considered.

Cobbo did get his shot at fullback in the trails and was beaten out by Nui. One good half against my mob when the game was buried shows nothing to me. He don’t have the fitness for it at NRL level.

Staggs is a disaster waiting to happen in the halves if he ever got an extended run there.

Hes 4kgs heavier than both Turbo and Latrell and the same height.

He just isn't that calibre of player. If he were, the Broncos would've started him at fullback from the outset. And even at the Broncos he's down the pecking order for that position.

Herbie’s ****ing great. Got the slick footwork and the athleticism but also a fantastic work rate for a centre, always looking to roll up his sleeves, good defender, very active support player too. He’d be a massive fan favourite on this forum if he played for us, right up there with big Dom. The Dylan Edwards comparison seems fair enough to me & if Edwards can succeed as an NRL fullback, Herbie should be better.

Great player. Just not a career fullback. Being 4kgs heavier than Latrell and Turbo precludes you from moving the way fullbacks need to. And Turbo and Latrell are superhuman athletic

If Herbie was capable of moving the way those two do at that size he'd be playing for Australia. And would be on a million bucks a year

Isn’t Herbie English?

Just wanna note re: Herbie’s listed height & weight that I’d take the numbers you see on player profiles with a grain of salt. Brian To’o is listed as being six feet tall for example. Maybe on stilts.

not sure if its old news being recycled, but i just read the dogs and knights are looking at hastings for 2023, makes refrence to zammit having a good relationship with hastings management also.

We could do a lot worse than,
6.Milford
7.Hastings

The Bulldogs could be more attractive to him as he wouldn't have to relocate. And they are improving.

we will honestly be in a similar position to the dogs next year unless our players start playing to their potential. Which with aob here is certainly no guarantee. You're right though, a healthy spine of pong, milf, hastings, brailey - with hodgson/the other english guy, clif, clune and randall would be the best we've rolled out in a long long time. And with a touch of depth there too.

I missed that Hastings has been moved to lock this weekend.

Getting more and more convinced that the resolution to this will be them losing one out of Hastings and Doueihi and they’ll be stuck with Brooks, simply because they’ve never had the bottle to drop him.

Bit of shame nobody thought to promote Tex as a serviceable 5/8 to Huddersfield to get an early release on Will Pryce😋

Just in this afternoon I have information that Daniel Ticehurst has left the club.
He will be returning back to QLD better opportunity.
I think it’s sad to see, another talent brought to club and now gone elsewhere.
I thought he had some quality cup games last year and was looking strong.
All the best Daniel

One of my favourite players, but with the new rules and us already having the Saifiti's and Klem, we don't need another giant prop. I think he'll find a club up there.

Sorry if I’m harping on about all junior reps news but for those who interested the johannenson boys have both got a release both have gone as a package deal to the canterbury bulldogs, this weekend will be there last game.
