2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

So now Triple M in Brisbane is saying it’ll come down to who’s offering the most money and Dobbo ‘has no doubt that he will stay in Newcastle’.

It’s probably a good sign that the coach who knows Milford better than anyone and desperately needs halves needed to have his arm twisted to even offer a 2nd year. That’s the type of player you want to get in a bidding war for.
This is the problem with leaving a dead coach in place. Their self interest conflicts with the interests of the club. AOB needs Milford more than the club needs Milford. Hence AOB is the only bloke willing to offer him a 3 year contract.

Its almost as though AOB didn't watch Milford phone it in at the broncos for 3-4 years straight. AOB is becoming a toxin to this club and in ways that we probably can't even see yet. He needs to go, yesterday.

I don’t understand what peoples plans are for next year if we don’t sign Milford?

We won’t be playing finals with Clune and Clifford.

Are we waiting for some half to just magically appear? I don’t see how we have any other option, and I stick by paying him bigger all will only be worse in the long run, as seen many times from many players, the moment they hit form they are going to want to get paid.

We either keep him and pay him fairly.

Or we don’t, and pay no one.

Yeah Milford phoned it in at the Broncos but half of our top 30 squad are phoning it in at the moment or are so ****e are unable to even phone it in.

Rebuild perhaps

Milf just isn't a player you go all out to sign. 6 months ago his market was South's offering 200k and 1 year. Even the dolphins don't want to do more than 2 years. He's been ok for the Knights, but that's more looking good in comparison to the scrubs we have been sending out there than being a game breaker.

No one is a better option than giving milf millions of dollars on a three year deal. Panic signings is why bad teams stay bad.

Knights need a half, we don't have one for 2022 and look how thats gone...

Imagine no milford in 2023...

At this stage absolutely no reason to watch these blokes phone it in, but imagine doing it with Clifford and Clune only...

We will have the most aggressive forward in the comp next year as well

It hasn't even been reported how much Knights or Dolphins are offering, has it?
If it was a huge amount his manager would leak it to show off.

We need a half or two, who else could we go for? Only hope is Milf or if someone breaks their contract. We could probably afford Milf and any other half that becomes available.

Milf isn't a halfback and never will be. So the question is really, who is going to play 5/8th.

The obvious answer is Ponga, but could also go with paying a transfer fee to get Pryce early, or even ask the coach to do his job and try and get something out of Clifford.

Lol AOB has to make Clifford perform... Imagine saying Coach needs to make Johns perform, or Thurston perform such a load of ****.

Watching Brooks play I think Clifford is better

So are we taking bets on how many games after he signs a contract before his game goes to ****?

I actually kind of reject the notion that Milf phoned it in at the Broncos. Just because his team was bad doesn’t mean he wasn’t trying. Go watch him in 2019 especially and he’s basically playing fullback and halfback at the same time and constantly has his hands on the ball. This was two years before his contract year.

He definitely didn’t play well over the last two years but to me he looked more like he was a bit lost out there rather than not trying. Clearly didn’t gel with Walters who I still maintain is a rubbish coach, Adam Reynolds is the real coach of that side now.

To me the issue he had was always that he was being asked to do a lot of things which aren’t the strengths of his game.

From memory he did look like he pulled up stumps, but it was more towards the end. But he copped a lot of flack for Brisbanes problems.

The real problem was Seibold and what he did, basically destroyed their culture overnight. Milf was left with not too much help in terms of playing group.

Phoning it in? Darius Boyd, phoned it in.

I think one criticism of him was he didn't run the ball enough at Brisbane in the latter years. One loss to us up there he didn't run once. I think it was down to trying to organise too much and forgetting how good he is on his feet. I hope we can unlock his running game a bit more then we have so far, it is a massive threat.

I still think Ponga is our best chance for good half in 2023, especially if he spends all off season working with John's, Green and Milford (if he stays).
Jarome Hughes was a fullback and is now one of the best 7's.

Then we go out and scout/develop a fullback that focuses on fullback duties: support play, kick returns and defensive structures.

Yeah you could see how unhappy he was by the end, copping the blame for everything that has gone wrong. And yeah Darius is the truest example of packing it in you’ll ever see. To the point where the enduring memory most will have of his career now.
