2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

We’ve just watched him phone it in on big money for multiple years at the Broncos and he hasn’t played even one game worthy of $700k this season. Hitching your wagon to Milford on big money longterm would be a very Newcastle move, I'll give you that.

My valuation would be $1.1-1.2 million over 2 years. I was thinking $1.5 million over 3 but I reckon with Milford you’re better off going shorter term but a little more money. It’s too short term a deal for him to phone it in.

I think if we offer him 2 years he is going to the Dolphins by the sounds of it.

Might have to suck it up and give him 3 then. Maybe front-load it while we have an absurd amount of cap space we can't spend.

I really believe if we sign him we have a roster which doesn't have that many gaps in it in terms of weekly no-brainer selections any coach would make.

1. Ponga
2. Young
3. Gagai
4.
5.
6. Milford
7.

13. Elliott
12.
11. Frizell
10. D Saifiti
9. Brailey
8. Klemmer

14.
15. J Saifiti
16.
17.

This is the skeleton of a side which should be competitive. Then beyond these guys you have Tuala, Hunt and Best competing for spots in the outside backs, Fitzgibbon, Hetherington, Croker, Jones and Thompson competing for spots in the forwards, and Clune & Clifford duking it out for the #7 jersey. And if anything too many utilities to fight over the 14. 12th simply won't be even close to good enough next year and if AOB gets the sack it's the most desirable first grade coaching job which might open any time soon & I really don't think we'll be short on applicants.

If Obi is coaching though you know Mann will be in the top 13.

Milford is the best half we’ve had since Mullen. I was an unabashed of Pearce but he was never a difference maker for us. If we can get a spine of Ponga Milford Brailey on the field for 18 plus games we’ll give the top 4 a shake.

Not with this coach. Not with the way so many of our players are happy to drop their levels.

So now Triple M in Brisbane is saying it’ll come down to who’s offering the most money and Dobbo ‘has no doubt that he will stay in Newcastle’.

It’s probably a good sign that the coach who knows Milford better than anyone and desperately needs halves needed to have his arm twisted to even offer a 2nd year. That’s the type of player you want to get in a bidding war for.

Edit: was Riccio, not Dobbo
