2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Show me anyone else is the NRL who is the tallest player, arguably the fastest and also 110kg.
I don’t know man, I think if you have to set really specific criteria like this, he probably isn’t “once in a generation”.

To me the classic once in a generation player is Latrell Mitchell. 100th percentile ball skills in the body of a guy who’d probably still be the best centre in the NRL without those skills.

Why do you think the NRL is starting to go fishing in the pacific islands now. They are full of them. Plenty might not be as fast as him but they are still as athletically gifted as him. They are a dime a dozen now.

Ones with actual footy nous like a Latrell that’s been mentioned will always be far and away more important then an athlete.

That might be all true but it is the Roosters we're talking about. Very well resourced and ruthless club. When's the last time we saw them consistently bad? I'd love to think we can make Dom regret his decision but I don't think the Roosters will stay down for too long.

Not many people who can be career coaches at a club, maybe Trent is out of idea's at the Roosters, am hoping their struggles continue.

I think the Roosters have won the spoon, or definitely gone close, under him before haven’t they? I think if there’s anyone who can rebound as a coach, it’s him.

As much as I’d like him to quit and get him back to the Knights!

As for Dom, there are definitely comparable wingers out there … it still really hurts to lose him though. Even this year every time he does something good, I can’t really enjoy it.

I feel crazy saying this, but for me there are honestly question marks as to how good of a coach Robbo actually is for me atm.

Craig Fitzgibbon was there the entire time Robbo was, and the team Fitz is now the head coach of has a 68% winning record under him. Interesting data point. I don’t think anyone would argue that the Sharks have a better roster than the Roosters - Fitz deserves so much credit for Cronulla’s improvement in defence and finding a system for an atypical halfback like Nicho to flourish in.

Robbo has always got a pass for how bad the Chooks usually look at the start of the year, because the team won comps. But should he have? Should they not have been better prepared? It’s cost them top 4 the last few seasons.

He often makes bad selection calls and sticks with them way too long (eg paying Walker on the left and Keary on the right most of 2022; the way he seems to be trying to turn Cheese into an Api Koroisau-esque hooker with subtlety around the ruck he’ll probably never have).

Needed to import leadership and nous to win his premierships (Maloney and SBW in 2013; Cronk in 2018-19).

Roosters in 2016, the one season he faced real adversity in terms of the players available to him, had an awfully similar season to the 2022 Knights… he’s had all star teams every other year.

Obviously his record is hard to argue with overall, but it’s a bit like being head coach of Real Madrid… of course he’s winning stuff. Arguably they win less than they should!

Dom Young is 21 and has 29 firstgrade tries.
Our highest ever try scorer, Aku, scored 110 tries.
I was wondering how many tries Aku had at the same age, and the answer turns out to be 0, because Aku was a few months older than Dom is now before he debuted.
Aku also holds our record for tries in a season with 21. Dom is currently on 11 with over half the season to go.

Thought exactly the same for a while now, he gets all the shiny toys, take out Cronks stay and the record doesn't look that good

Yeah he's doing some great things this year. If he weren't going to the Roosters, the entire fanbase would be frothing over him at the moment. But it really takes it out of the sails when you know he's gone.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… we have 1 top 30 spot left, GIVE IT TO TYSON SMOOTHY! We need an out and out 9 to go anywhere this season, Crossland has been unreal but he’s not a run on 9. Smoothy just had another great performance in QLD Cup on the weekend.

Been going through our squad and by my count we have 19 players signed for 2024 which includes Pearce-Paul and Pryce, as they are unknown quality, like new kids on the block I won’t list them in the 17 which I an doing to emphasise where we are and obviously what we need.
1 Ponga
2 Mapapalangi/Miller
3 Gagai
4 Best
5 Marzhew
6 Gamble
7 Hastings
8 DanS
9 Brailey
10 Thompson
11 Hetherington
12 Croker
13 Elliott
14 Crosslands
15 Miller/Mapapalangi
16 JSaf
17 Sasagi
Some players are likely out of preferred position and Lucas could join this list if uses his player option.
Stand out needs are obviously a backup hooker, the need to resign Frizell and Fitz, Lucas would be a plus, Clune as we have no one obviously coming through to cover 7 and I would throw in Vea’ila.
We have 15 of contract with Toloi and Young gone, so with the five I listed to keep and the two gone those in serious doubt for 2024 are Johns, Jones, Hunt, Mann, Aukafolau, Tuala, Rugless, Hodgson

Rumours that Newcastle and Sharks are in discussions for a player swap/loan for the rest of the season. Jayden Berrell seems to be the Sharks player, unsure who we are potentially swapping.

Clune is from down that way, and Ryan Rivett and Liam Sutton are both Cronulla juniors.
