2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Has anyone Seen the Weidler report that Knights may be looking to offload Best and DSaf? He is always pushing rubbish but I’m interested to see if anyone has heard anything on it.

The effort and value we are getting out of D saf for the money he is on, I could see we might be looking at our options.

I couldn't understand Best, he wouldn't be on as much and I think he is muched improved this year in all areas of his game, particularly his defence.

The Best rumour came up last year as well, didn't it. I don't get why we'd want to be getting rid of him, but where there's smoke there's usually fire. Unless he was vaping while he had his sleeve done, then there's just smoke.

Might be moving towards paying less for forwards and putting that money in to players that more directly impact the result.

I've been critical of the Safs for years with their attitude seemingly cruising in the NRL. Lateral movement can be an issue for them as well.

A bit of a danger releasing one, and trying to keep the other. Wouldn't want to lost both of them.

Best hasn't reached the heights he did when he burst on to the scene. He just isn't the damaging ball runner he should be. Marzhew is a similar build and stature and has the impact best used to have.

Whether that is down to us not getting him the ball in good position early against equal defenders who knows.

I just read the breakdown of the article on Fox. A couple of take outs from this:

Danny Weidler quoted as saying "but it could include the likes of (Daniel) Saifiti or Bradman Best leaving the club if the right offer came along". That sounds like pure speculation with the names, not a direct quote from the club, just throw some names up there.

Then you have Bulldogs General Manager of Football, Phil Gould, working for the same masthead as Weidler, speculating that there is an imbalance in our salary cap. Does he know this for sure? Or is he shaking the tree in the hopes that a Saifiti or Best end up at his club?

I see nothing of actual substance in this whole article. I continue to see a conflict of interest the nrl has decided to do nothing about.

I think someone (@slotmachine ?) worked out our salary cap status a while back and it did seem not the best situation. Pretty sure that’s one reason we were happy to let Klemmer go.

But with him gone (although we’re still paying some of it this year), and Frizell’s deal ending this year, you’d think it should be getting a bit more under control from next season onwards. Saifitis still have a while to go though.

I wouldn’t have thought Best was being paid massive overs …

This is why the NRL needs to release player wages like the NBA and NFL. Gives fans the transparency of teams cap situations and also holds the front offices abit more accountable imo. To hear best might be moved on when hes just getting healthy is **** news and dont understand how our cap can be that bad.

Good take. The "it could include the likes of just sounds like hes picked 2 names out a hat for clickbait"

Frizzell and Fitzgibbon being off contract are 2 that I'd be happy to get rid of, ditto with Best think we have young centres that could do a decent job at half the price.

D Saf and Best just happen to be the players other teams would snap up.
He might as well of said we will listen to offers for anyone, but instead he picked a couple of players who would be snapped up for their current price.

Peter Parr said himself our cap is out of shape and he'll be seeking to fix it up. I can't see Saifiti or Best being the ones cut though. Frizell will hopefully stay for less, Fitz can go.

People forget that we go rid of Klemmer and didn't get into a bidding war over Young to help fix the cap. I'm not sure how much further they have to go.

Frizzell and Best have been two of our ... best ... this year, Frizzell in particular would just about be the first player selected for me. Wouldn't be getting rid of either.

Even so on the wrong side of 30, maybe this explains interest on Sorenson on a 1/3 of the coin. (Yes I get Sorenson is old as well.)

Yeah once you’ve got Sorensen, you feel more secure asking Friz to take a pay cut to stay. The offer can be a bit more “take it or leave it”. You’d be bold to be willing to let him walk if it means a full season of Brodie or Jack Johns…

Won’t surprise me to see Sorensen signed along with Friz and Fitz and Jones and Johns gone.
Safs x 2, Thompson, Hetherington, Croker and Elliott, strong pack plus and a couple of younger one coming through.

Coming from the mole so could just be all made up but bird, sau and ravawala all want out of the dragons apperently. We should go after the sau and ravawala.
