2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Rumours that Newcastle and Sharks are in discussions for a player swap/loan for the rest of the season. Jayden Berrell seems to be the Sharks player, unsure who we are potentially swapping.
I'll withhold judgement until (if) it happens, but I'm a bit over swap arrangements. Understand that it's the reality of it, that Sharks (or any club) are unlikely to release players without something in return, however us giving up something of value possibly creates another roster hole (as it did with Randall moving on).

Now that I think about it, Miller only left Cronulla for better money, a longer contract and a chance at firstgrade.
They wanted to keep him.
I think he'd be happy to go back if they gave him the same contract as we gave him, and he's at least doubled his value IMO. He might even get an upgrade and we get a hooker.

I’m only up for this if we are loaning someone for the year as well. Sharks got one junior. Not getting another. But **** if we’re just asking to loan, but it is the sharks.
The Sharks will no doubt want something worthwhile in return.

I guess it can be argued if you want something come to the party with something else is fair. Just haven’t seen it happen so much. Seems arrogant but fair enough. But ours can only be a loan as well.

He's a 28 year old who has never played NRL.
He is going well in cup this year, playing 80 minutes in many games, making 40 + tackles and 48.5 fantasy points, but that just makes him about the level of Aukafolau or Ben Talty, who were both let go by their clubs for nothing to seek a better opportunity.
We could give them Tuala, but that would be over paying.

This probably makes the most sense. Dykes is their only long term injury, I don't know what their hooker stocks are like.

There's a report Tigers are also shopping around Simpkin

Simpkin told he is free agent as he won't be resigned, same for nofa and a few others.

Brooks has been offered a 2 year extension worth 1 million

Simpkin is genuinely a worse player than Crossland. He can’t pass off the ground and in about 5 minutes the other day Rapana tackled him 3 times before he got a pass away in the Raiders 10m zone. I’d be dismayed if Newcastle offered him a deal and truly hope we stay away.

a professionally run club would have a back up, ready to slot straight in, player in ever spine position - before being needed.
There aren’t 34 NRL hookers out there though. The Melbourne Storm for example are universally agreed as the most professionally run club in the comp, but if Grant goes down they’re left with Jayden Nikorima or Tyran Wishart playing hooker.

We had a look at Randall last year and saw how poorly he went, and somehow managed to convince the Titans to let us have Marzhew for him. Also seems like we may have had some bad luck with Riley Jones breaking his arm as I reckon he’d have been pushing for that 14 jersey to share the hooking role with Crossland if he’d been injury free this year.

Fair, I haven't really watched him too closely tbh
