2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

You compare Kiraz' Cup performances to guys like Lucas, Maps and even Vea'ila (who still mostly plays Flegg), and he's nowhere near them. No one would have predicted how he'd play at the Dogs. Clearly Gus had no clue. They got lucky.

Just a side note though that Kiraz started with a bang last year and faded as the season went on. Let's wait and see if he can keep it up this year.

Simply put if even 2/3 guys above hit the potential we think they have, no one will be hand-wringing about Kiraz after that.

Hastings on James Graham’s podcast the other day singled out Maps, along with Thompson, Hodgson, and Pryce + Pearce-Paul, as the young/emerging players he’s most excited about for the next few years at the club. I think he’s already extended to 2025 too. All but pencilled in to succeed Gags at right centre at this point I would have though.

Ken Maumalo just signed with Titans effective immediately until 2025. Would’ve been a decent replacement for Dom.

The decent replacement for Dom would be Khan-Periera from titans who is off contract this year.
Young, fast and can find try line similar to what we losing, and could maybe even get him this year with them signing Maumalo

Didn’t know he was off contract. Definitely an excellent prospect. I also wouldn’t mind having a crack at Junior Tupou from the Tigers although I don’t know his contract situation.

Yeah Curran is good.

Bit of an off-field cloud around him (alleged assault of a teenager at a pub in Port Macquarie). He’s still playing because it’s not bad enough for the no-fault stand down rule. Dunno if that stuff has an influence on him not playing for the Warriors atm.

But yeah I’d be on board. Can play anywhere in the back row.
Wasn’t he the guy that took a big stumbling trip up the players race a couple of years ago. One of the funniest NRL moments I’ve seen for a while.😂
Clumsy, but yeah the bloke can play and he would be good in red and blue I reckon.

Yep that was him 😂

Warbrick didn’t have the greatest game with his hands last night but if they do end up getting nofa he’d be as good replacement for young, off contract at the end of the year and a good threat in the air and probably knows miler well.

Would Warbrick know Miller? They didn’t play sevens for the same country…

But yeah a big, strong dude who carries it strong out of his own end and drops the ball a lot…. basically a like-for-like.

Defence needs work, got stood up by that young Titans winger. Needs to improve his anticipation and reading of the game.

Didn’t realise he played for nz so scratch that but yeah bit to work on but if he can nail it he’ll be a force

With Young gone at the end of the year, do we let go both Hunt and Tuala go at the end of the year as well?
Should we go to the market for another winger? Or should we look to blood Lucas on the wing?

I was wondering the same thing i thought lucas on the wing but is that a waste of talent ? How quick is he ?

I think we keep one of hunt and tuala, i believe tuala is younger so that would make sense but he only plays wing no centre he makes no impact there

What we need at this stage is for Sasagi and Maps to get over injury and get match fit playing Cup in positions that they will likely be considered for 1sts, if they can do that then we can better assess our needs both are signed for 2024 and we need them to stand up along with Lucas and Vea’ila.

Our two most likely wingers are Chris Vea'ila and Luke Plizner - both tall, good jumpers and strong as well.
Neither of them will ever have the speed and height of Dom, but I suppose we have never seen that before, and we'll never see it again.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fergurson starts his NRL career on the wing.
