2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

I would be mad because he's a good player and I don't want him to go......but would be nice if he did remain loyal, he just seemed the type of kid.

Agree, the club is a joke and it's getting harder and harder to support.

Klem I don't mind that he's gone as he got a longer deal from it and we were able to sure up a more important position.
Still doesn’t solve some of the basic issues at the Knights: horrendous defensive strategies; poor pathways program; and abysmal recruitment at all levels. Yes, you now need to be a masochist to support the old Knoughts. Get back to what worked in 97 and 01 please.

Agreed, but not at the loss of a Keeley, Sharpe, Armstrong, Bradbury, Bryan, Ferguson, Ve’ila, Maps. Others I can handle. As it is necessary to have Miller.

But I also find it ****fully petty from sharks wanting a 3rd string FB swapped. Just fill spot with a junior in your own damn system.
They could say the exact same thing to us though. The Sharks don't owe us anything. They do have a contract with Miller though. Good for us to land him but it's good business from Cronulla getting what they can from us in return. It also sets an example for other players if they want to leave before their deal is up, that the club has to receive some form of benefit.

What about the part where AOB is forced to make another short term decision to maximise the win percentage for the 23' season at the expense of better medium to long term strategic management.

And the part where we could've re-signed Dom halfway through last season when it was abundantly obvious that he was already invaluable to us, and on an upwards trajectory heading into a world cup that would inevitably mean by November we'd be paying more to keep him. But yet, didn't even make him an offer

Both top points. How we weren't negotiating with Young by the end of June is beyond me.

smart management by both club and player. dom was on the up with a world cup to play why would he lock in so soon? also good management by the knights with no salary cap figure locked in and agreed to, whilst needing to find a halfback as first priority.

Yeah I think it was mentioned somewhere that Young didn't want to enter negotiations last year.

Also those saying we should pay him so much extra this year ... we have to use 95% of our cap each year, who's to say we have that money going spare? At this late stage you'd think the 2023 spend would already be pretty much locked in.

I've never liked when the Knights just bend over and release someone from a contract without nothing in return. This is how it should be, you want something, you gotta give something in return. This is professional sports where there's only one winner, should always be about bettering yourself and not helping out other teams for free.

You're assuming they weren't trying to talk to big Dom, and it wasn't he that wanted to hang off until after the world cup though... You forget the impact of a smart manager.

What decision has been made by AOB to the detriment of the Knights mid to long term strategic management?

Tevita Toloi looked like he could be anything in under 18s. Our best player in his first year. But he struggled to make Flegg this year, although I thought he looked very good in at least 1 game.
Not in our top 5 young forwards now.

Unclear if he’s confirming that Toloi is going to the Sharks or if his release is unrelated to the Miller situation. He was on a development contract so would expect someone else to be upgraded into one of those spots, though they already had 2 free as it was. Ryan Rivett who we got from the Sharks may have taken a development spot as well.

AOB doesn't have the final say in who we target Parr does, I am sure that is to stop this very thing from happening.

At that time, a 20 year old Dom Young, with less than 12 months of form under his belt, without notoriety, was one injury away from being worth no more than his current deal. If the club offered him a big upgrade and extension at that time he and his manager would've been foolish to wait. He wasn't Suaalii. He was a guy who's form was being questioned week in week out - as in, no one knew if it was going to be permanent. In retrospect, its obvious that he is worth every dollar he is chasing.

It was obviously a considered gamble from the club. It could've paid off for them. But it didn't.

I think you're rewriting history a bit there, he was one of our best all year. And even if he did get injured he still had 2023 with us. If the player backs themselves then any decent manager will take them to wait.

One day we might cotton on to this tactic ... 2037 maybe.
