2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

We've got about half a dozen FG quality players who already can't get a run in the backs. Miller is a small fullback and would be wasted on an edge. It'd also block pathway for legitimate outside backs who aren't 29 year old fullbacks who've never played centre or wing in FG
The 3 years seems a bit much but out of our prospects Hodgson is only one ready to go now and I say that merely out of expectation but also his training ethic. Kid works HARD to be FG ready. Likes of Armstrong and Sharpe won’t be ready physically for close to 3 years. Battle between Miller, Hodgo and spruce is what the team needs, gives time to bring Armstrong or Sharpe through better developed.

Just on Sharpe and Armstrong, Sharpe was fullback for the red shirts yesterday (and looked good) while Armstrong was posted on the right wing and didn't do a lot. Make of that what you will

In what universe is Hodgson ready for first grade?

Sharpe is an exciting prospect, but we shouldn't rush a skinny 18 year old into seniors. Plenty of time for him to develop the strength he'll need, without getting him hurt.

I think he's physically strong and fit enough.
He was unnaturally strong for a little guy in reserve grade 2 years ago and he's hit the gym pretty hard since then.
Whether his lack of game time means he's off the pace skill wise is another question.
If we have no other choice, I'd be happy to throw him in the deep end to see if he can swim. He's physically ready, and has massive self belief.

i guess that’s what trials are for at the moment you would assume it’s between him and Dane.

For 2024 its Pryce, Hodgson, Sharpe and Armstrong. Adding Miller would be ideal because he'd probably go close to the top of that list. But jeez, how much depth for one position do we really need?

The better teams would have all their designated cap space loaded into two players at most.

They're probably thinking they can use Miller for a couple seasons then ship him off to the ESL for the 3rd

Even 24 season I dont think Shap and Armstrong would be ready, If Hodgo plays well it'll be hard to dethrone him. But they are young enough and good enough to do two more pre seasons, then some tough calls would have to be made. Its smart getting the likes of Pryce and Miller cause 1. We have no idea if those two would be any good and 2 No idea of the promise and potential Armstrong, Hodgson and Sharpe will end up showing.

Too much depth is good, whilst we sort out who the best custodian is for the future.

Hodgson isn't under contract for 2024.

We also signed another young fullback from QLD named Jeremy Trappett who was in year 12 last year so would probably be 18 or 19 this season.

Well someone needs to let Jeremy know that the club has already moved on from him lol. Miller is the clubs future.

I don't agree re young fullbacks needing to be 21 etc. If they're good enough to play FG then invariably they'll be in the team before they're 20. And if they're destined for FG they'll be in the team well before that.

If Sharpe has a great preseason and destroys NSW cup, it wouldn't be outrageous for him to be given a go this year. Maybe Sharpe is a poor example because he's physically under developed compared to most others. But take your pick of the 17 current fullbacks in the NRL. Probably all of them debuted as teenagers

I'm pretty sure Sharpe wouldn't have got a Flegg pre season last year.
He was 17 and in his first year of Ball, and no automatic selection for Ball in the early rounds. They usually only let a handful of Ball players train with Flegg, and only 17 year olds if their name is Sione or Bradman.
If he is training with firstgrade now, he's up 4 grades on where he was training last year. Gone from 2 or 3 hours a week to 30 or 40 hours a week.
Fair chance he'll either be like all our other kids who train up and get injured, or he'll make some massive gains this year.

Not so much the age, more physicality and mental toughness. I've only seen one season of Sharpe and Armstrong play well, so they'll have to back it up this year and next pre season. Kinda contradicting myself over Hodgson, cause we've barely seen him play, but just have a strong feeling with is mentality to come back this year again after a horrendous injury last season and still be mentality and physically strong to the point coaches seem to be leaning towards him. But its also why it probably is import, for this season alone to get Miller, another body, a strong performer, physically sound.

Anywho, great to have the discussion and that we have scouted talent like Hodgo, Sharpe and Armstrong.

Most good fullbacks come in and play centre wing as they start to break into NRL for a year or 2 before making the move to fullback fulltime so always good to have a few fullback options in your squad
