2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Crokes looked great too, scored one try straight up the middle from about 25 out, then the next attacking set put John Tofaloa(sp?) over untouched from 10 out with a short pass while looking out the back.
were you able to tell if Crokes was playing prop or second row?

I went from thinking Croker was lacking in all talent areas to ever be a realistic prospect for FG career, to thinking he has absolutely everything in his game and could become a very good player for us if he keeps improving.

Huge footy IQ. Very adaptable. Very tough, fit and skillfull. 110% effort. Wouldn't be surprised at all if he keeps improving finishes the year as something of a revelation for the club.

Hoping they amplify his game playing ability and stay in front row. Showed some wonderful offload ability and ball work. Need that difference in Fwd pack, need to bet let loose a bit. Be interesting the impact McDermott has had and Monaghan for that matter. Big upgrades on Peters and Smith

You have to wonder why Harry Croker fell so much out of favour in 2022. He has always been a slimmer and more skilful version of Matt and he made more junior NSW and Australian sides than Matt, and in 2021 he seemed to be a favourite of Andrew Ryan in reserve grade, but in 2022 he only got a limited number of games in Flegg, one of which he had to come off the bench to play centre and had a wow of a game - our best on field I thought.
All I can think of is that he has found other interests and isn't putting in the time and effort, because he's always looked like a better version of Matt and isn't even training with firstgrade, if he is at the club at all.

Miller getting a 3 year deal.

How much would we be paying for Miller on the cap? I can't imagine he is going to be getting big money.

So 3 years, if he spends a year in 1st grade and is not required for years 2 and 3 he can be handy depth player for fullback and wing.

I don't see a big issue with it tbh.

Otherwise we don't sign him and a few injuries we are saying why didn't we sign Miller! I'm not convinced Hodgson is ready for NRL yet, either experience wise or body.

Blue shirt might indicate hes in the picture for the 17? Bench maybe?

Who was at left side second row
Left second row was Lachy Fitz. Interesting that Jack Johns was right second row. I will temper that by saying there was no sign of Tyson Frizzell at all. Jack Hetherington, Adam Elliott and Oryn Keeley were in the rehab group. The rest in rehab were Gags, Simi Sisagi and Kurt Mann.

Jack Johns turns 26 this year. Hasn't really been good enough to crack grade for more than a game at a time here and there. As far as edge forwards go, I'd have him behind Oryn Keeley and other juniors. Johns is very capable injury cover and good depth.

Leo Thompson on the other hand. In for a huge year.

Johns will be a great coach someday.
We should have him being assistant coach for under 16s right now.
It's his future.

I didn't really think about like that. I was just thinking about blocking pathways. Didn't really think about injuries. Maybe 3 years could be a recruitment master class.

We've got about half a dozen FG quality players who already can't get a run in the backs. Miller is a small fullback and would be wasted on an edge. It'd also block pathway for legitimate outside backs who aren't 29 year old fullbacks who've never played centre or wing in FG

I just had a look at his specs.
Miller is 1.8m tall weighing 84kg.
Someone like Staines who struggled on the wing is 1.84m tall weighing 87kg.
Happy to sign Miller for one or two seasons but 3 seasons is too long.

I've got a good feeling about miller for some reason. Also those height and weight stat's are never that accurate.
