2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Lot's of mixed messages in this article.
Basically an interview with Dom Youngs manager.
Says Dom is happy to stay in Newcastle and is keen to sign "sooner rather than later", but also says he has 9 clubs interested and needs to look at all the offers, and they are also wanting the Knights to revise their current offer.
It implies that Dom is concentrating on training and leaving all this to his manager.

The 21-year-old winger has returned to Knights training after an off-season break.

Still think we could lose him to a club he thinks he can play finals footy at.

Not a lot we can do about that at the moment, and if winning the premiership is his main motivator then there are 2 clubs he can go to. Maybe 3.

I think he is testing his value and making sure he is happy with the deal on offer here. I think he will stay if our offer is competitive due to the English lads we have arriving.

It’s obvious the best clubs have stars across the park, but also they have solid depth. You have to except injuries are going to happen. Getting guys like Miller and the English recruits next year, our juniors coming through will bolster our depth, and push competition for positions.

If we manage to keep Dom at Newcastle that would be a hugh boost for us.

We paid Aku premium money. I see Dom as a game changer like Aku was. So I'm happy to pay a bigger dollar then usual. Just the whole team needs to lift around him. I can see a snippet of where the club is heading. Hopefully the boys on the field can too.
Aku was undoubtedly the best winger in the league when we gave him his deal. By the end of it we had to pay Manly to take him off us. Dom has had a really good season and hopefully ends up as good as Aku was but paying him premium would be paying on potential. Fully see why people want us to pay it, I want to keep him as well. Just more supportive of the rationale to not pay whatever it costs that it seems the majority want to go with.

Rumour from the Sharks forum,
"Heard an interesting rumour from Buzz today. He said that Fitz told him he loves Miller as a player and clubman, and his priority is to keep him if possible. They will be looking at our cap situation to see if a similar 3 year deal to what Newy are offering could be accommodated with us to provide him that financial stability."

With all the negative comments this week about a three year deal for Miller and with who we have coming through, I'm kind of OK if we don't get Miller. The question to me isn't so much who plays fullback then? It who fills our remaining top 30 spots? Do we start looking within?

One thing about Hodgson is that he won't fail for lack of trying.
If the theme for 2023 is players who never stop trying, Hodgson won't be out of place. He goes for 20 runs a game and never submits in a tackle. Anyone who tackles him has a fight on their hands.
I did stick my head in to the boys training run this morning with the daughter to watch what was largely an opposed session. Hodgson was playing fb for the top squad and I kept a close eye on him. He is in everything. For those who want someone to return the ball at a million miles an hour to take the easy yards, he's your man. He supports, works hard, never shuts up, competes on everything and was safe as. Didn't mind giving it to more highly credentialled team mates either.

The other guy some of the seniors were happy to rap was Tom Cant, he was in everything too.

Is there any spectator seating there?
I'm wondering how all the lower grades playing their home games there will work without any sort of grandstand.

None whatsoever. The main squad was on the enclosed ground straight off the building. We stood with about eight others on a patio at the McDonald's end of the ground, couldn't see much when the ball was down the other end. I would love to go and watch some junior games there, I hope it is accessible.

What position is Tom Cant?

Tom Cant has been a real effort player since under 16s, but he hasn't grown much. Having said that, guys like Cam Murray, Victor Radley and Bateman are all about the same size and go OK.

Crokes looked great too, scored one try straight up the middle from about 25 out, then the next attacking set put John Tofaloa(sp?) over untouched from 10 out with a short pass while looking out the back.
