2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

I think Gagai would do well at fullback, but I really have my doubts about whether he has the legs to go for 27 rounds. He's 32, looks to have declined a bit already and has only ever played wing/centre on a full season basis. To shift to fullback now is a big ask.

I'm hoping we get Miller. The guy is only gonna be a fill in for a year or two. Provided he doesn't make the spot his own, he'll become a back up for positions 1 through to 5 after that.

Lachie Miller isn’t just a fullback and is the sort of player that will end up play every game in the top grade like Tuala has done the last few years.

On Dom Young, I love him as a player and it would hurt for him to leave but if he wants to go to the highest bidder I say let him. Wingers just don’t influence games enough and to tie up to much money in him could end up to big a headache.
He’s way too small to play anywhere else but fullback

Wingers are damn important nowadays. From set starts to aerial attacks. I don't think your thinking straight. How many tries would have been scored against us if it wasn't for a Dom young effort.
Understand what you’re saying but he was terrific this year and the teams performance was terrible. Totally agree re wingers but you’re better off trying to find a diamond in the rough I think then paying a premium when the rest of the team is awful.

Cuzy, notice the other 3 specialist fullbacks I referenced in my post? Miller, a 29 year old journeyman is just icing on the cake.

If I'm a junior, I'm not bothered by Miller on a 1 year contract, even 2 years. But 3 says to me the club doesn't really care about my pathway, or at least, the club will willingly sell my pathway for short term gain by adding an extra year onto the contract of a 29 year old fill in who won't even be in the firsts team by next season.

I'm ranting. And I hope Miller makes me look like a gronk. But it's also particularly insulting to me the way this club goes about its business sometimes.

If I'm a junior I know there are other clubs than Newcastle and I'm likely a few years away from making NRL debut, Miller on a 3 year deal doesn't worry me as I'm not ready to make grade now, and I need to be working on MY game to make sure when I am ready for grade, I can make my debut with Newcastle or be spotted by another team.

Miller shouldn't worry any junior.

If I were a junior I would have been more worried about the aquisition of Hodgson from the UK, himself a young up and coming fullback with a reputation as being a strong future propsect.

And, if I am a junior fullback I am celebrating right now as KP has been moved to 5/8, prior to that their pathway was blocked anyhow.

We paid Aku premium money. I see Dom as a game changer like Aku was. So I'm happy to pay a bigger dollar then usual. Just the whole team needs to lift around him. I can see a snippet of where the club is heading. Hopefully the boys on the field can too.

Fletcher Myers went to Manly in 2022 because he said he wanted to play fullback and we'd signed David Armstrong. Manly played him at centre just like us, but they have given him a 2 year development deal now.

With the number of injuries in this league constantly creating opportunities, a 3-year deal for a good-but-not-great almost-30 rugby convert shouldn't worry any junior.

Lololol

Alright, once more. When there's Pryce, Miller, Hodgson and Armstrong ahead of you...

Miller pinching an unnecessary 3rd year is an especially insulting decision by the club, if I'm a junior.

😆 insulting? If an unproven junior is upset at having to compete for a spot against fairly beatable squad members, then I'm absolutely happy for them to either grow a set or move along.

9 clubs have enquired or showed interest in Dominic young for 2024
After the season he had, and the expectations that his form would continue during the world cup, I find it incomprehensible that the Knights wouldn't have sat down and made him an extension offer with a big increase to tie him up pre world cup for the next few seasons. Surely that's common sense ?????

They have done that. Bloke has probably been on holidays and ignored his manager until now which is why there has been a delay.
