2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Not a groundbreaking revelation but a 3 year deal taking up a top 30 spot with Hodgson, Pryce, Armstrong and Sharpe either at the club or incoming would be a poor decision, even though I like Miller.

If Hodgson hadn't copped an unlucky contact injury last year we wouldn't even be thinking about 3 years for Miller.
Great point, are we looking at his utility value beyond next year? He does cover wing and centre too.

Miller knows how to find space and has serious speed off the mark, he’d add some spark and abit of danger out the back of the ball being spread either way.
I'd love to see him adapt a Rugby Union style kick return and attack from the kick return linking up with our big bodied wingers in Young and Marzhew... could be really dangerous if its a broken defensive line from the kick chase

He's 29. Players peak athleticism begins to fall off a cliff at about this age. 3 years is precarious because Pryce, Armstrong and Hodgson are each specialist fullbacks and will be expecting to be given a fair crack at the job. I wonder how Miller fits into this after the 23' season.

Also, what will up and coming juniors be thinking

Up and coming juniors probably thinking the same, he is 29, and a 3 year contract won't stand in their way of pushing him aside to get their shot.

If they can't push Miller out of the way to get their shot, maybe the never deserved one!
Cuzy, notice the other 3 specialist fullbacks I referenced in my post? Miller, a 29 year old journeyman is just icing on the cake.

If I'm a junior, I'm not bothered by Miller on a 1 year contract, even 2 years. But 3 says to me the club doesn't really care about my pathway, or at least, the club will willingly sell my pathway for short term gain by adding an extra year onto the contract of a 29 year old fill in who won't even be in the firsts team by next season.

I'm ranting. And I hope Miller makes me look like a gronk. But it's also particularly insulting to me the way this club goes about its business sometimes.

So there's the question. Come round 1 2025, assuming all are fit, who is the knights fullback? I'm guessing not Miller. Might be a year too soon for Sharpe, so I'm thinking Pryce, Hodgson or Armstrong, probably in that order to be fair.

A whole lot can happen between now and then miller could kill it and be our fullback for the next 5 years

Like Chris Andersons 1 marker idea, that sounds like a good idea in theory but would be terrible in practise. 99% of the time the ball would find touch.

Lot's of mixed messages in this article.
Basically an interview with Dom Youngs manager.
Says Dom is happy to stay in Newcastle and is keen to sign "sooner rather than later", but also says he has 9 clubs interested and needs to look at all the offers, and they are also wanting the Knights to revise their current offer.
It implies that Dom is concentrating on training and leaving all this to his manager.

Depends on they're development as you say, Fletcher and Armstrong had good years last year so improving upon that next year is paramount and giving them a clear line and opportunities, otherwise they'll get poached.

Pryce, Hodson, Armstrong and Sharpe all great potential, all won't stay, just need to keep the right ones. I can see Pryce moving different positions, centre or 5/8. Hodgo could move centre but that's probably where Young will be aiming for soon too.

Lachie Miller isn’t just a fullback and is the sort of player that will end up play every game in the top grade like Tuala has done the last few years.

On Dom Young, I love him as a player and it would hurt for him to leave but if he wants to go to the highest bidder I say let him. Wingers just don’t influence games enough and to tie up to much money in him could end up to big a headache.

Wingers are damn important nowadays. From set starts to aerial attacks. I don't think your thinking straight. How many tries would have been scored against us if it wasn't for a Dom young effort.

i haven't read the article, but the above to me is just manager talk to get more out of the knights to keep Dom (9 other clubs interested) and to speed up the process "sign sooner rather than later".

To me it sounds more likely that he will sign with us then leave, so long as we don't lowball him on the offer, which then becomes the issue, what's a good price and what's too much?

I wouldn't mind Gagai playing fullback as it allows Mapapalangi to play centre and Gagai cannot defend in the centres at all so would eliminate that weakness from the team. After all it won't be a long term solution and hopefully Pryce claims the fullback position next season.
My first thought was no way but the idea has grown on me heaps. Not comparing him to edwards but dylan is just a ball running fullback and look how valuable he is to the panthers and starting their sets with to'o. I reckon gagai can do the same thing as hes genuine tackle breaker and ball runner, pair that with young and marshew starting our sets that would take a heap of pressure off our forwards aswell and should see us starting sets in good field position.

I think sharpe will definitely be in the mix come 2025 it would be disappointing if knights see it any other way and another club snatched him up

Ideally we sign Miller for 1-2 seasons but if he wants 3 then we are probably better off just playing Gagai as a stopgap for this year. I think Gagai can do well at fullback if the game plan was kept simple. On the 2 occasions that Gagai did run for 200m last season the side won.
