2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Newcastle’s million-dollar man Kalyn Ponga is set to return to five-eighth as Olympic Sevens convert Lachlan Miller inches closer to a move up the F1 from Cronulla to play fullback.

That's all I can read without an account.

The SMH is weird, sometimes I can read them, sometimes I can't.
I think you get to read to many articles for free each month or something lile that.

I was albe to read it. From how it worded Bailey has spent the most time at fullback with gags and gamble also training there

We’ve had a number of guys train [at fullback] over the summer such as young Bailey Hodgson who is finally injury free.

“He’s trained there most of the summer alongside guys like Dane Gagai and Tyson Gamble has spent some time back there. Strengthening that fullback spot remains a priority for us.”

I have a subscription to the SMH.

Negotiations have continued and Cronulla’s stance on Miller has softened as with the prospect of a 3 year deal being offered by the Knights if he is released from the last year of his contract. A deal could be finalised as early as next week provided to Sharks can sign a replacement player.

The article says a decision was to move Ponga to 5/8 after he was ruled out for the season last year with concussion. He has been training a 6 all summer.
Knights love giving long contract out.
Hopefully it's not on big $ as he may be replaced in 24.

It's the reason having a coach that is fighting for survival is a very bad idea.
All his decisions are short term planning.
recruitment manger is in charge at contracts at most nrl clubs, yes the coach gets a say but ultimately the final say isnt made by the coach himself... and journey man slotmachine? really? the bloke hasnt had a proper crack yet due to being in another sport, give him a chance

I get what your saying but the coach does have a big input. I'm happy for the deal if it's for less than $200k as stated above. Healthy competition isn't a bad thing.
He isn't a proven week in week out fullback and is older. I'm happy for him to perform and nullify my doubts.

Btw who is our recruitment manager?

Id have to think its still Zammit? I havent heard otherwise, but yeah AOB has massive input but at the end of the day itll also have to be given the tick by Parr, Buderus and Zammit so im sure if the rest say yes it will be in our best interests.

And also i agree billy, Miller will have the miles in the legs but the rest of his body will be closer to a 20 year olds then a 30 year olds due to less full on contact, has a lot more upside to him then we've seen IMO

A guy who is turning 29 and third choice fullback at the sharks fits the bill if you ask me.

I don't get the froth personally, stop gap for a year or two at best.

My point being that a decent club wouldn't be less than 2 months out from round 1 scratching around for a key spine player, and forced into handing out a 3 year deal out of pure desperation.

Just add it to the list of questionable decisions, like 2 year deals for guys no one else wants.
