2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

That's not a good thing to hope for.. All those guys are reserve grade age and haven't debuted (excluding Leo), so either late bloomers or not good enough. We can't be relying on that entirely, need to bring in someone cheap that we know is up to the level.

I’d much rather give any of those 3 a go over someone like tapau, after watching Toleafoa last year in cup he stood up and I think deserves a shot.

If this is about Joey Manu again, first off: he’s a cat AND he’s from New Zealand, yuck, no thank you. Second: It’s a case by case thing. The reason I don’t think we could sign Joey is that back when he was last close to coming off contract, the Warriors basically all but said “we will make you the richest player in the NRL” and he chose to stay with the Chooks anyway. He’s a part of their long term plans and he seems happy there.

Similarly someone on here suggested we pick up AJ Brimson because he’s friends with KP - I lost my **** and pointed out he has a five year contract. It’s not that the contract couldn’t simply be ended by mutual consent, it can, it’s about what the mutual commitment to a deal of that length says about the player and the club.

The players who were under contract who we have picked up so far are guys who didn’t get that kind of firm commitment from their club.

Probably going to be shot, but I don't hate the idea of going after Taupau on a low contract. Give him 1 year with a 1 year option in the clubs favour. Rotation of Safs, Taupau, Hetherington, Croker and Thompson sounds good to me. I honestly think having two young inexperienced forwards is enough, don't need to add a 3rd in there considering the Safs arent consistent YET and Hetherington isn't full of experience. Even if Taupau isn't bought for a 30 minute weekly stint

What’s wrong with being from NZ?

Enjoying how sassy you are of late.

Wasn't aimed at any particular comment on here. My frustration is generally with the club and how some fans buy into its complacency and lack of pragmatism by making excuses for why things aren't getting done. We just waited 18 months to replace Pearce with Hastings, ffs.

We all know that if any of the better clubs in the comp were stuck with our roster, and if no good players were off contract, that wouldn't prevent those clubs from attempting to transact however possible to ensure that the right players were brought to the club. We're still missing a fkn fullback! That's a huge gaping hole in our roster and our season for 23' and all we seem to be doing is some light window shopping for reserve graders and there are members on this forum rationalising why that is acceptable.

Good points, well made mate.

Just a shame we missed out on Garrick. I do think he was emerging as a top 8 fullback in the NRL and his decision to bin that off in exchange for a run at centre for Manly is a weird one unless he got paid big time.

The club’s ****ty planning has reared its head again in that they’re looking to shift KP when the market for off contract fullbacks is probably at its weakest for a while.

I don’t know what’s best to do going forward, what the solution is other than Bailey Hodgson getting fit and solving it for us. I know what I’d do, I’d have them install a button which says “Pay Herbie” in my desk, and I’d start mashing it until he played for us. Can he be a good fullback? No clue. I probably would take the punt just because I like him as a player. But I don’t know what’s best.

if we got farworth that'd make us the most english club in nrl history surely. Hastings, Young, Hodgson, KPP, Pryce

Article where Parr talks about filling the last 3 roster spots.

Says we'll keep an open mind and have till well into next year to fill them.

Says we are not in talks for anymore swap deals.

Says it would be inappropriate to talk about Miller because he is on contract elsewhere, and all the talk in coming from outside the club. (sounds like we are going hard to me)

says we have several non contracted players training right now. I'd say Kalepo just needs to finish the preseason to get one of the 3 spots.

Yea the Garrick one does hurt.
He was our best case scenario 1 for 2023 with Ponga at 6.

Not once in the history of the current administration of this club have they announced a significant signing without it first being the subject of media speculation.

The idea that somehow we'd find out about Miller but are being asked to believe the club is working on bigger singings that remain top secret is the limit case for credulity. They're probably hoping that an opportunity reveals itself over the next month or so before they hit the panic button

I think Peter is playing coy because the club is gonna be opportunistic with the last two spots.

It’s December and the NRL doesn’t yet have a CBA in place for next year let alone a definitive salary cap figure. (Side note: Remember the way the media hammered the Greenburg admin for every little bit of half-truth or innuendo they could concoct a re: salary cap auditing, judiciary rules etc, yet it’s crickets about this staggering, basic incompetence from Abdo and PVL).

I reckon there’s a decent chance that some teams have made cap commitments around the expectation that the figure will be $12 million for next season. There might be a mad panic and some enforced unloading of players if it turns out to be less than that. Which it very well might, because the game isn’t making as much money as it should. Because Abdo and PVL sold the TV rights for a tuppence. Because they’re incompetent.

Anyway this might explain the “wait and see” mode the club is in. I do think we have quite a bit of cap space.
