2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Tedesco asking for an extension at the Chooks. Which ever way this pans out there could be some movement with fullbacks.

2022 stats:

Randall 17 games, 1 try, 0 try assists, 1 line break assist, 38 metres running average, tackle efficiency 95.1%

Brailey 8 games, 1 try, 4 try assists, 4 line break assists, 52 metres running average, tackle efficiency 94.9%

How on earth anyone can say Randall is the better player is totally beyond me. One of the most baffling calls I've seen in the history of the forum tbh.
I don't think he's better, but he is a great second string number nine. The way Brailey gets injured it just seems silly to let Randall go and he is definitely better than anyone else in the club that's had a go at 9. It's a bit like letting Hoy go and now we are looking for fullbacks and again Hoy isn't a first choice number one but he did get better and Ponga is in the same boat as Brailey when it comes to injuries and at some stage during the year they are both going to need to be covered either for rep duty or injury.

It's not a matter of 'letting him go'.

We have a salary cap and limited amount of spots in the roster. He is being offered more money and a longer term deal, and most importantly wants to go... it would be selfish to hold him back to play NSW Cup when he can play NRL up there.

Getting tired of hearing all this.. The club shouldn't have let Pearce go , Pearce wanted out and said his body wasn't up to it anymore his life here had turned to **** and almost everyone on here was complaining about how crap he was playing ..
Now all of a sudden heaps on here saying the club stuffed up letting him go, fair dinkum make up your minds .
All I read on here for ages was whinge whinge whinge about Pearce while here, now its whinge whinge whinge because the club let him go.
It's the same with Hoy now it's what's the club doing letting Hoy go but while he was here it was all get rid of Hoy because he's not good enough, the poor club has no chance of pleasing you lot ..
Randell is the same thing too oh he's rubbish get rid of him, so they swap him for a winger and all of a sudden it's, what is the club doing letting him go we need him as back up hooker. Well actually we dont we have signed a back up hooker so it won't be Mann or Crossland ...
Personally i think none of you know what is happening internally at the club and that's how you want it or you wouldn't have anything to whinge about.

The club did stuff up, but not for letting Pearce go. But by not being ruthless and identifying themselves Pearce was on the decline and not having a crack at all the off contract halves at the time and waiting for him to walk.

Do you know what is going on internally?🤔

This speaks to a bigger underlying problem at the club. We don't view ourselves as worthy of great things and it expresses itself in detrimental ways. Imagine a top club with money to spend not planning on a big money play to replace its sole captain and leading playmaker, knowing that the player was 33 years old and declining in form.

The only explanation is that AOB didn't think we could replace him. Which is not only untrue its a losers mentality. And look where it got us. The NRL has a salary cap for these exact situations, so all 16 (17) clubs can compete for players

Epic rant!

I think the club messed up by letting Pearce go without having a replacement signed, sealed and delivered. You can’t argue that didn’t tank our season in ‘22.

Hoy I admit really impressed me last season, I remember saying in his player thread that it was a big year for him, he needed to improve to show us he’s a first grader, and he did that. Then we let him go to have a shot at a first grade spot in the UK … and then decided to move Ponga to the halves. Where is the planning at this club? 🤔

i agree the club has made some bad decisions around recruitment in the recent past and we should have had a plan in place to replace Pearce as he was close to the end of his career before he requested a late release and left. I guess part of the plan was Clifford, but that didn't work out.

This is something that the club would have realised and the big reasoning for bringing Parr to the club. We have just swapped Klemmer for Hastings which improves us massively for next year. We are rumored to swap Randell with Marshew which will be a big improvement as well. These are things Parr would have his hands all over.

Yes we still need to find a fullback, prop and a 2nd rower for next season, but you have to find the right player not just grab whoever is available.

We are slightly hamstrung for next season because we have a few players contracted for next year that we need to move on but currently we can't, so we don't have much depth for next season.

The idea that a NQ discard halfback that we paid something like 400k to relocate to Newcastle was going to replace Pearce shows how hopelessly naive and incompetent we are. Clifford was like 24 yrs old when he left NQ.

The very fact that we got 3 good games out of him still surprises me.

It was never Knights idea to use Clifford to replace Pearce, hence why he played 6 all year instead of 7 when fit. The club came out openly saying they never replaced him due to missing out on brooksy. simple as that

So brailey has 4 try assists but can't get on the field...

If he was on the field he would be a better choice

As of now waste of money 💰

To be fair it’s only really the Roosters and to a lesser extent the Rabbitohs who have both the gumption and the clout to eighty-six their star players and beloved club stalwarts the moment they reach their use-by date (or if a better option rears its head). The Broncos routinely hold onto and keep playing guys who are comically washed for example.

There definitely has been a bit of a “good guy” mentality in a lot of our decision-making around top 30 deals though, for sure. Can’t wait to pull the trigger on “compassionate grounds” releases and there’s definitely been a reticence in the past to do horse-trading style player transactions, probably out of some misguided concern about hurting the feelings of adult professional athletes. The latter seems to be the first thing Parr has changed about how we operate and it’s very pleasing to see.

I couldn’t be more convinced for example that the club actively wanted to get off Klemmer’s money, and I reckon in the past they might have just let him walk. Parr got us something we actually wanted in exchange.

Agree. But I'm kinda speaking more so to a desire for success than a desire to protect the interests of players.

Most teams in the comp, except maybe a handful, would make pre-emptive arrangements to bolster their squad. We've been a fkn shambles. We've gone nearly 3 seasons with the ability to spend our way into a marquee signing, but yet made no such signing. That is mediocre stuff.
