2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Haha my logic re: Kennedy is that I don’t think he’s that good. I see him as a bit of a Michael Gordon. Good enough to be a starter somewhere, but destined to be a journeyman. Every club he plays at doing the distracted boyfriend meme the whole time he’s there over talented young prospects or marquee free agents.

Dykes is a huge talent and I think the Sharkies still like Trindall long term in the halves so fullback will be his spot.

Gags was always going to be centre for 2023, its wishful thinking otherwise, Same as AOB being sacked.

Randall is only up for trade because if the past few years have proven anything its that if we lose Brailey, Randall isn't good enough to keep us a top 8 team so it isn't worth keeping him. Great defender but cant do the job when called upon.

On this - I remember AOB saying in his end of season pod that Gagai has displayed “elite honesty” (lol) and that he’s initiated “I will play where the team needs me” conversations on his own.

Very much sounds like code for “boss I keep getting owned out here” lol. I actually think there’s a fair chance that he at worst gets moved to left centre next year.

Maps has played more at right centre than on the left in juniors and NSW Cup. It would be a bit ask to put an inexperienced guy like that there, probably the hardest position to defend in on the field, but he’s probably the best option given that he has looked like a pretty good defender in his chances in first grade. He’d be playing beside his best mate in Dom so that might help re: cohesion on that edge.

Keenan Palasia has requested a release from his contract at Brisbane.

That’s Palasia and Atoni, two reliable rotation middles who are capable of stepping up and starting (Palasia also decent on an edge), both asking out in the first week or so after the end of the World Cup.

More proof if it was needed that releasing Klemmer to get a halfback was worth it. We’ll find decent forward reinforcements. Whereas we could have tried for another 5 years and still not signed a decent 7.
Couldn't agree more, Palasai wants a release but doesn't have a club yet with Titans and Dragons both still fighting for his signature. Is it worth us throwing our hat in the ring? he's relatively young and handy too, would be a cheap forward for depth. If not I'm sure the right prop will become available

Yeah Palasia is good. Manly offered Tom Flegler about $675K per season in a 6 year deal - I don’t really think he’s much better than Keenan if at all.

On Gagai, honestly he should be the bait we send out in order to get a fullback. Cronulla probably fancy themselves as having a shot at winning the comp but they play a utility at left centre for example, who hasn’t disgraced himself but it’s not really his spot - If they look at his highlights playing on the left side of the Souths backline they might be tempted to take him on.

Just sit down and have a chat with him - look Dane, we thought we’d be in a better spot than we ended up being in when we signed you (didn’t know Pearce was leaving at that time for example). We’re re-tooling and there might be growing pains. Do you want to stick around for that?

Then if he’s got that same itch which drove him to Souths again, the desire for guaranteed finals footy, offer him up (with an offer to eat a small amount of his deal) in exchange for - plot twist - Will Kennedy. Sorry but Lachie Miller isn’t proven, and I am pretty sure Cronulla wanna transition to Dykes anyway (Kennedy off contract at the end of next year).
that makes sense on so many levels and you are right that Cronulla will want to transition to Dykes soon. Only issue is they are in a premiership window and i doubt they release Kennedy for 2023.

But i like the thought process

Sound like Palasia wants to move back home and manly are offering overs to win him their way. Not sure that's a battle that we would want to win. Being that he'd always wanna move back home, meaning we'd just be a transition club or we'd have to pay overs ourselves & incur a self-imposed choke of our still unquantifiable cap space.

Nah Toohey
Todays Tele, Randall being considered for a swap, Titans, Marzhew, big winger apparently. Knights have Mann and Crossland as back up hooker.
Unbelievable, one of our weakest back up spots for a front line player subject to long term injury.
Know Randall isn’t a star but gives his best, a good backup, better than Mann and Crossland and no sign of someone with any experience in lower grades. Can’t understand some of the deals being done, hope it’s just paper talk.
Do we really need a reserve grade winger?

Toohey confirmed Randall wants to go

2022 stats:

Randall 17 games, 1 try, 0 try assists, 1 line break assist, 38 metres running average, tackle efficiency 95.1%

Brailey 8 games, 1 try, 4 try assists, 4 line break assists, 52 metres running average, tackle efficiency 94.9%

How on earth anyone can say Randall is the better player is totally beyond me. One of the most baffling calls I've seen in the history of the forum tbh.
