Apparently according to the other place Shane Flanagans been mentioned as an assistant coach by Toohey. Would be epic for mine if that was the case.
Toohey just repeated that Flanagan had approached us mid season, which he reported months ago. He then listed 4 or 5 others who he referred to as "the usual suspects". Basically, he just said the search was on and they are looking at a lot of people.

Tuala scores three tries, top scorer for season and you 5????
Does leave a question mark?

In all seriousness its Ponga or Best scoring 90% of those tries not Tuala doing anything special.. our edge defence continues to be a problem.. yes, maybe Tuala is a lock for the spot and he just need to keep working on the defensive systems or maybe we need to change up personal.. I dont know.

This will be unpopular, but is just me or has Ponga gotten worse this year?
I honestly think he played the second half of the year injured, but he is in a period of his career where he needs to decide what player he wants to be remembered as. Next year he needs to run the ball more and work on his positioning in d as well as attack in the middle (if the forwards actually get second phase in their game).

No point him standing behind Brailey the whole game if forwards aren't offloading. He would be better used elsewhere for me.

I think Adzy’s had KP do lots of work to try and develop that complete fullback game a la Teddy, but he just never looks as dangerous probing around the middle of the ruck or buzzing around looking to support, as he does getting the ball two passes wide of the ruck or at first receiver down a short side using his pace and footwork to either break the line or create something for a teammate. Nor I think is his vision quite there as it is with his contemporaries when it comes to swinging around to create the extra number which facilitates the attack of his teammates. Always looks at his best as a focal point, not a complimentary piece.

He honestly profiles more similarly to Luke Keary as an attacking player than he does James Tedesco. And that’s why so many think his true position is five-eighth. Also note that he seemed to develop a rapport with Clifford pretty quickly, and our best attacking game of the season was against the Raiders - Jake at the reins, Ponga buzzing around and attacking his preferred spots, and Phoenix mostly functioning as an extra/supplementary option but to an extent sort of staying out of the way in key moments.

Why didn’t Kalyn work at 6 last time? I think part of it was he was too young and couldn’t read the game like he does now (and also obviously oppositions have a tip sheet on you in your second season that they didn’t have before). But also, Connor really isn’t a fullback and he struggled there, and Mitch isn’t the calm head to steer a team around and compliment that out-and-out attacking five-eighth.

Count me among the people who think a Clifford/Ponga halves combo is the future for this team. Even if Bailey Hodgson doesn’t live up to the hype, I think it’s easier to find another gun at fullback than another gun half, with the way the game is played now.

I wrote my first post about Ponga being a 5/8 in waiting a hour after I first laid eyes on him at one of Brownies "opposed sessions" at Morry Breen Oval in Toronto. They spent most of the session with Ponga, Fitz and Cory Denniss running plays at Brodie Jones, Brayden Musgrove and Brent Naden and making those guys look like complete mugs as they ran about 5 tries past them - all by Ponga running with Fitz on one side, Denniss on the other, and deciding to either pass or go himself when he got to the line.
It was only a training exercise, but it was like Ponga was playing for the Harlem Globetrotters, and the other guys were the Washington Generals (the "team" that lost to the globetrotters 16'000 times).

It was a such a small sample size regardless. It was 3 games to start the year before he got moved back. I was always in the put Ponga back to 1 group, but I never thought 6 should be written off because of 3 games. You give him some time there, get comfortable with the role, I think he'd find his way without problem.

Anyone get the feeling that if Pearce gets a deal for 2023 and beyond the club will let him go early?

I know they said they won't but..

Up until last night I would have said no way, after that performance.. I dont know we nearly won and Pearce did FA, finals is when you want your experienced HB to stand up and he didn't.
