Knights say Smith's departure is no problem

The Newcastle Knights board are certain to release coach Brian Smith a year early from his current deal, to take the reins at the troubled Sydney Roosters next year.

Smith will replace Brad Fittler but who will take the Knights job is now open to speculation.

Click on to see what Newcastle CEO Steve Burraston had to say about the shock news and their plans to move on.

was it just a coincidence then that 'Gus' was wrapping Smithy deluxe last weekend after writing such a 'fluff-piece' in the paper after we beat the faders?

He has given Smith a wrap all year, I think he feels for him with the negative media that he can sometimes attract.

I think Rick Stone is the go look what the Bulldogs have achived with Moore in charge this year. Rick has the support of the players and board and will be a stable influence on the side as opposed to bringing in another outsider.

I wonder if they could get BRIAN NOBLE that would be a massive coup. Although we probably couldn't afford him I think he would enjoy the challenge of coaching in the NRL, and Newcastle would be a perfect fit for him.

just read this quote on an article from leaguehq...

fittler's response when asked about the possibility of coacing the knights: "How about Newcastle then, Fittler was asked. "It's a good place, Newcastle," he said. "I told Noycey I would come back and burn him some day."

stay away freddy. we don't want you

I would like to see Graeme Murray back in the NRL coachin, and the Knights have a pozzy open, he was ridiculed after 1 bad season, but everyone has to admit, he was a SOO coach and any team with him, would be a changed team.

But i would rather Phil Gould, he seems to love the Knights so why not make them his life??

It would be great to see him going around in the Newy sheds, giving our boys a wrap after winning the 2010 grand final over the roosters ;)

Did anyone read Kirk Reynoldonson's comment about Smith?

I don't mean to be offensive to Kirk, because I respect anyone who has taken the filed in the NRL, but if he was "that good" wouldn't he have been retained by St George when he went there in 2008.

I guess he still holds some resentment toward Smith, who I might add wasn't there when his ridiculous contract was signed.

that would be like me having an employment contract that states "If I turn up to work they will re-employ me next year"

Former Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes interested in Newcastle Knights job

Former Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes interested in Newcastle Knights job

Premiership-winner Steve Folkes last night became the first high-profile coach to officially declare interest in Newcastle Knights job for 2010.

Contenders will start applying for the Newcastle position vacated by Brian Smith.

Newcastle's board is expected to meet on Monday night to determine whether Smith will be sacked immediately or be allowed to see out the season.

Smith's assistant Rick Stone has support, but it is unlikely Andrew and Matthew Johns would consider going back to coach at their former club.

Others contenders are Folkes, Melbourne Storm assistant coach Michael Maguire, Cronulla, New South Wales and Australia assistant Shane Flanagan and former Dally M coach of the year Graham Murray.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that Folkes is interested in the vacant Knights job.

"Absolutely. It would be a terrific opportunity. I think the value of experience gets a little overlooked at times," he said.

"I think I could go up there and do a good job. Newcastle is a league-mad town and they have a lot of good young players coming through. There have been a few ties between Canterbury and Newcastle over the years - Warren Ryan, Michael Hagan, Mark Sargent have gone between the two clubs."

Murray, who guided the Roosters and North Queensland Cowboys to grand finals, said Newcastle Knights would be a "plum job".

Joey and Matty have amazing football minds and knowledge..and Matty I feel would be a spectacular coach, see what he has done at Melb...obviously Bellamy isnt all that special, he has had Johns under him and an awesome playing roster under him at Melb for the last 3 minor prems...a coach of a team with Smith, Slater, Folau, Crocker, Inglis, Geyer, Cronk will do well if my 5 year old neice coached them, and look at him without Johns and Folau and Crocker and Geyer, not doing as well...

So those of u suggesting that it is inappropriate to suggest (or select) M.Johns as a coach IMO are quite misguided...and then turn around and suggest Folkes! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahaha

Matthew Johns has very limited coaching experience. You can't attribute much of the Storm's success other than Cronk's development to him.

He himself said last year when asked if he had ever seen any wrestling moves being taught there that he only really worked with Cronk, and didn't see any team training sessions!

And also, since he has been sacked this year, Melbourne have improved. They were in a slump at the start of the year, but have won 7 out of their last 9, if you weren't aware. They won 3 out of 7 to start the year.

You need to get your facts straight before you start laughing at others, Matho.

Interesting that Rick Stone is the front runner, he must be a fair decent coach.

Still I would probably feel safer if we were to sign someone like Steve Folkes.

Ch 9 says Matty Johns - interested.

I think it could be a possibility. He will probably realise what has happened has probably destroyed his media career.

Burro also said they wont hold what happened 7 years ago, against him.
