I'd have no problem with the Johns brothers coaching the Knights... though I just can't see it happening.

Andrew Johns is to young , Matty would be ok, Kearney good option, someone mentioned Brown, Folkes they were both given the flick by their respective clubs for good reason, leave them out of it. Gould and Reilly great options but unlikely.

i would faint if Phil Gould coach us ! . But seriously Steve Kearney would be ok but i perfer someone with alot coaching experience up there sleeves like Steve Folkes , Sterlo

Folkes or Kearney would be ok but no Brown please, he had a champion team for 4 years at St George and did nothing the guy is a dud a nice bloke but a rubbish coach kinda like Hagan

Head Coach: Malcolm Reilly

Assistant Coaches: Matthew Johns
Paul Harragon (forwards)
Mark Hughes (backs)

Strength and Conditioning: Bill Peden
Robbie O'Davis

I'd love Gus, but that isn't going to happen.

How about Rip Taylor? I know that he isn't a known coach, but he has been great basically everywhere he has gone. He had our 06 flegg team playing as a team, and they were a lot mentally tougher than their ages would suggest. He's also someone who is very well liked among the rugby league community, yet is still pretty strict unlike Hagan. Plus he has already coached a fair amount of our current squad. I think he'd be someone who could come in and carry on with what Smith has started, instead of trying to change our entire team again.

Either way though I think Johns (Matty) should be assistant.

Phil loves the Knights...could be...

He did say on the Footy Show a few weeks ago that he'd be much more likely to return to club coaching than rep coaching.

But I doubt it.

I actually wonder if Gould didn't have something to do with Smith going to Easts. We all know Gould is a massive fan of Smith, and still holds some clout at the Roosters ... I reckon Smith would be Gould's first choice to turn the Roosters around.

I would love Stephen Kearney, I'd be happy with Rip Taylor, and an outside roughie would be Brian McClennan.

Please no to Folkes or any of the other clapped out have-beens mentioned in this thread.

I think it has his fingerprints all over it to be honest.

Reading this thread... you'd think Gus was a coaching God or something. TBH... I think he's being massively overrated on this forum. The games changed a lot since the last time he coached... and though he's a smart man... he consistently makes ridiculous comments when commentating. I'm not as sure as some of you are about Gus.

When I heard the news... the first two names I thought of were Stephen Kearney and Nathan Brown (as I can't see Joey taking on a FT coaching role).

Kearney did some good things with NZ and I thought Brown was doing a decent job before Bennett took over.

Yeah, I thought of Nathan Brown too ... I'd be happy with him.

People wanting Phil Gould are living in cloud cookoo land. But you can't argue with his results, two premierships in 11 years coaching first grade, and only lost one origin series out of eight, with one drawn.

All these guys with no coaching experience, Andrew Johns, Paul Harragon, can't think of a better way to kill the club, to be honest.

And as for promoting an in house assistant, I'm not convinced, but I'd reserve my judgement. I will just say, I'm not aware of any Knights team that Trent Robinson has coached that has had any good results.

Rip averages one premiership every two years at lower grade level, over about 20 years! Plus as you mention, he has that link to all our 2006 jersey flegg players.

In many ways, he is the logical choice ...

Sooo ****ed off old smithy came good. I would love joey to take it up but he is probably already making a killing with commitments to other teams, but he could do it easy if he wanted too he knows the club and was assistant coach to origin.

For those of you wanting Andrew or Matthew Johns as coach ... have a read of this stat:

http://www.leaguehq.com.au/news/lhq...-just-too-young/2009/07/18/1247865323640.html

After round 18, the teams led by the six youngest NRL coaches occupy the positions of 16th to 10th on the ladder (the only exception was the 11th-placed Wests Tigers and their ultra-experienced coach Tim Sheens).

The average age of the coaches at the helm of the eight sides in play-off slots was 48 years 11 months, while for the bottom eight it was 43 - nearly a six-year age gap.

They are just way too inexperienced, and add to that, they don't even have any experience as an assistant coach! Fittler had six months at least, and Cleary had several years at the Warriors and Roosters.

Interesting article.

I just hope the Knights won't look to rookie coaches.

If we want to win a premiership in the next years or so, IMO we will need someone experienced to take over.

Rip Taylor successes:
1 with our Jersey Flegg team, 1 with Wentworthville last year, multiple premierships with various Real NRL teams.

Michael Maguire and Rick Stone candidates for Newcastle Knights job
By Barry Toohey
July 19, 2009

A Melbourne Storm assistant coach is considered one of the front-runners to take over from Brian Smith at Newcastle Knights next season - but it's not Stephen Kearney.

Little-known Michael Maguire has emerged as a potential coaching replacement at the Knights, along with Smith's current deputy Rick Stone.

While Smith's replacement is yet to be discussed given the shock nature of his decision to quit the club at the end of the season to join the Sydney Roosters, it is known both Maguire and Stone have support within the Knights hierarchy and have been spoken about in the past as head-coaching prospects.

It is understood high-profile Knights director Paul Harragon is a strong ally of Stone.

He would also have the support of the playing group as he is thought of highly within their ranks.

A former long-term Burleigh Bears coach, Stone is a local Newcastle boy who was brought to the Knights by former coach Michael Hagan and has been in the system for more than four years.

Maguire's name has been mentioned more than once over the past 12 months as an untried NRL coach with enormous potential.

was it just a coincidence then that 'Gus' was wrapping Smithy deluxe last weekend after writing such a 'fluff-piece' in the paper after we beat the faders?

If we aren't pushing for Stephen Kearney, I'd go with Rick Stone... but I'd prefer a higher profile coach.

Rip Taylor had won all those lower grade titles, but NRL is a different ball game.

Burro was on the Sunday Footy Show and he did say they havent really spoke about a replacement as of yet.
