Tyson Gamble

Even next year I think a 6.Gamble 7.Cogger combo will work well for us if Hastings is out.

Hastings would be so angry at Carrigan for that tackle, it will hinder him for what should have been the peak of his career.

Yeah if there’s anything that can be done to more permanently fix or at least improve the state of that leg, I reckon we should have him do it, even if there’s a lengthy recovery time. It can’t be good in the long run for him to keep playing on it…

Possibly more influential than Hastings in the halves. I feel like we lose more if he was out.
Think it’s a bit more of we lose less with Clune covering Hastings where we don’t have good cover at 6. Will likely be different next year. Hopefully Hastings gets his leg/foot fixed for 2024.

Has anyone seen the full clip? I feel like there's probably more to it, like if he says we're the lowest cost spine he'd be totally right.

A little bit of both to begin with. Then Mase was just being Mase trying to make a headline. Also doesn’t help when Scope isn’t a fan of Hastings because of his relationship with DCE. Scope was trying to stick up for Gamble though.

Nathan Cleary who’s probably the third best halfback in the comp. I think we’d be okay.
I personally think DCE is better than Cleary.

Cleary is the benefactor of a great system, a great and talented team, consistent combinations, his father being a great coach and THE coach, and him being granted the time and opportunity to develop his game at every turn. All those factors make for excellent statistical accumulation, particularly when you start as an 18 year old.

There's no doubting he is a brilliant halfback. As studious as they come. A clutch halfback too, in key moments. But I scoff at the idea that he should be compared to players like Thurston and Joey. Cleary isn't taking Origin games by the scruff of the neck and winning them, time and time again with individual brilliance when the game is on the line. At Origin level the bloke hardly stands out. Maloney was better for the Blues. To that extent, I'd say Cleary is overrated. Brilliant. But overrated.

100% agree Les. I wouldn’t put Cleary near Cronk just yet let alone freaks like JT and Joey. DCE could do what Cleary does for Penrith but Cleary could not have played as well this year as DCE has in a genuinely pretty bad Manly side.

Shaun Johnson also showed what he can do with his first opportunity to play behind a good pack in a well coached team for the first time in a long long time and he should win the Dally M.

The talk of Cleary being potentially the GOAT halfback in some circles is just insane. He’s a very, very good club halfback, and his athleticism, precision kicking, hard running etc are almost the exact attributes you’d give a halfback if you were making one in a lab (or, indeed, a very well funded “halfback academy”). But there’s this level of vision that the truly all time great halves have which he hasn’t at this stage really shown.

I agree with both but also you are comparing him to people that are coming to the end of their careers, Cleary is 25, still a bit off from his prime.

His also happy to play second fiddle at times and let Luai do all the running and just play his role, I think he has been better since Luai's injury, he needs to find a better balance there.

I guess everyone is waiting for him to really own an origin series which he hasn't to date.

Yeah but I also reckon Joey and JT were both better in their early 20’s than Cleary is now. Both are clear of every other halfback I’ve seen in terms of being the total package and the gap between Joey and JT is itself quite big.

He's been playing for 7 years in a team stacked with rep talent and a generational coach. 7 years of perfect conditions for growth and has arguably has plateaued. Been at the same level for a few years now.

Applying the eye test, he's maybe maybe top 10 halfbacks of all time. Definitely not anywhere near top 5. You've got players like, Sterlo light years ahead of him. Also, if I were picking a team, I'd pick Stacey Jones ahead of him.
