NRL Round 4- Bulldogs Vs Knights - 3:00pm Saturday, 28th March - Accor Stadium

If we don‘t give away so many penalties and six agains then the forwards might have some gas to have a crack (except Mcewen, he is lazy and needs glue on his hands). We were playing on borrowed time from the 20 min mark.
And Smith needs to have a defender on his hip inside our 20.
Most of the penalties were unjust even looking at it back, especially since the Warriors got away with A LOT watching it back I saw forward passes, holding down, offsides, facials (that Angus Crichton got penalised for so I’m guessing it’s a penalty).

The annoying thing about that game was we got penalised to kingdom come for crap most of the time meanwhile the Warriors could seemingly do whatever they wanted.

Ref said Marzhew tackles the Warrior in the air by grabbing his arm, surprise surprise the reply shows he didn’t touch his arm at all… still a penalty though showing they were looking for literally anything.

Judging by the Warriors three games so far and the extremely favourable calls in all of them it makes it seem like the NRL want a specific team to get better.

it's going to happen again against the dogs unless we have better possession control. The penalties are the result of us losing the ruck, not the other way round. it's not a coincidence that the riff, dogs and wahs receive the most penalties and ruck infringement calls. All three build their game around possession control.

This is reductive because obviously no team wants to make errors and concede penalties, and every team would like to have a territory advantage, etc etc etc, but yeah certain good teams build their entire game around trying to have the better of that stuff the whole game. Whereas others are more concerned with being better at taking advantage of the period of the game when they’re on top.

Brisbane conceded the most penalties last year & won the comp. They are honestly not that good at controlling the ruck and their defensive system isn’t particularly sophisticated. They either attack extremely aggressively with their defence to try to force errors, or they yield territory and scramble, depending on situation. They don’t look to build their way into a game: basically as soon as they have some good go forward they are going to try to score. They can play **** for a full half then flip a switch. Modern Melbourne are like that too.

Both these teams have games vs Penrith, NZ, Bulldogs etc where they are put under the pump the way we were. They ride it out and then when they win it’s because they have more strike from their key guys.

This is what I think we need to & are chasing: when you spend big on elite key players, you win games by being able to absorb pressure and then, once you get something going, you can hurt them worse and more quickly than they hurt you.

No use whining about penalties. Just get better. Get fitter. Get stronger. Get to the point where you can stay in it for long periods. Then you back our answers to guys like Walsh, Hughes etc to do the rest.

Obviously not gonna happen without those guys on the weekend, but I was actually heartened that the guys we had hung in there for as long as they did. If the Wahs brought that intensity last year it would have been 48-0 at half time.

There was a point early in the game when we were on their line attacking, I legit saw two players scream out the line 2 metres offside. Then they went down our end and we are penalised for being offside.

Also, how many times have we seen teams repeatedly hold a player down on their line multiple times so they can regroup and no sin bins? Yet we get a sin bin for it.

The refereeing atm is extremely variable and in the new Rugba Leeg ball, is as an impure science where offence punishment, both within games and in the next game up, is anything but consistent.
After watching every game this last weekend, there were multiple occasions where similar offences were treated in a totally different way. I have played, coached and watched this game for over 65 years and I now have no idea what the rules are or how/ why/ when they are enforced. The game is now a lottery!

I personally like the 6 again rule, it adds pace and beats the wrestle days, but I think it is very over used right now and its killing teams. The rule has something going for it it just needs some tweaking.

It seemed fine to me last year, when not given inside the 40.

But the major problem is they are given so frequently, viewers usually have no idea why they’re given, players have no time to adjust to how the ref is officiating, the whole thing just becomes a mess.

Personally I’d be happy to see the back of them. A full blown penalty still seems like the best reward as an attacking team to me. The only exception would be the final moments of a game when a team is attacking to win - in that case I’d be happy with the sin bin being used a lot more liberally. The other side is committing professional fouls, after all.

We had the blown out scores and one sided contests when they first bought the 6 again rule in 2021. They then changed it to the 40 metre line which was working fine. I had no problem with it.

Now they’ve gone back which makes zero sense. Having blokes like PVL and Abdo who know nothing about the game is costing it currently. The only reason I can think why they’ve changed is it makes it a lot easier for the officials to manipulate results. Have they given an actual reason for why they changed it again?

The thing that infuriated me in 2021 and now has come back is when teams give them away on purpose. The panthers continually give them away on purpose and a few other teams, even us I think tbh have given them away when it just wouldn’t happen if it was a full penalty kick for touch.

I like the 6 again rule, it is better than the game griding to a halt for every penalty. It used to be so stop start it was ridiculous.

But, there are tweaks it needs, what I would change.

1) Go back to 6 agains only outside the 40m line.
2) Stop handing them out willy nilly and I'd like to see the ref having some discussions with players and captains on the run. If slow in the ruck, or whatever give the captain that warning that if it continues 6 agains will start for it, get your team in line. Then if 6 agains start for it, at the next stoppage go speak with the captain and say I gave you a warning there and now we have seen some 6 agains for it, if that continues I may bin someone.
3) 6 agains should not be given for what the ref considers a professional 6 again. Deliberately holding down to get the line set etc on the 1st tackle should be penalised to make the penalty against that harsher.
4) Ref must call out 6 again and the reason. 6 again ruck, 6 again crowding, 6 again Pheonix etc.
5) I think refs have lost touch with when a player deserves the right to a quick play the ball vs when the tackler was dominant and deserves to hold down a little longer. Thats a feel for the game thing. and I see a lot of 6 agains given where the tackler isn't even trying to get up at all, or the tackler isn't really even on them anymore. Frivolous 6 agains need to cease and have them only for actual, clear infringements.

I believe 6 agains are an issue because they aren't an official penalty, and many of them only result in an extra tackle of two so are given way too freely. Much like Origin is Reffed, let the game flow, let teams get in to the arm wrestle with sets and earn the field position. Don't gift it to them with 6 agains.

I'd rather watch a game that is a contest between the two teams for ascendancy, vs ref chucking field position to teams for minor ruck issues.

Poor Pheonix, always getting bullied by the reffs 😞
I do agree we need to just go back to last year for the most part, and 100% if they give it away on first tackle its a penalty but i dont think its that good in the attacking 20, teams would just give away a penalty to slow it down there.
