Mitch Barnett discussion

That was a 12 weeker!

They don't hand them out that long these days I gotta say.

Although I'd tend to think the Newton one was more a case of terrible timing, not quite as deliberate and senseless as this one.
The Newton one was at least while a tackle was being made

There is no excuse for what he did yesterday, but Barnett has always been a solid player for us.

There is no worse punishment than knowing that you were the reason your team loss and I'm sure it will hurt for a number of weeks to come with a stint on the sideline.

What might reduce the ban is the fact he was looking the other way when he raised the elbow, it didn't look intentional when you watch the replay but not an excuse for what he did.

I just see the Barnett incident as idiotic. I see Mitchells as reckless. Anyone that has played club footy, this stuff happens all the time, you get away with tons in the ruck and getting your ears pulled, clenched fist to the throat etc is common. But with the stage he’s on, and the way the game is going. He is in trouble

Robert Dillon argues that Barnett was rushing to cover defend, Smith veered to obstruct him, Barnett tried to fend him out of the way and missed with his hand, causing him to accidently follow through with the elbow to the jaw.

Says he has watched it repeatedly in slow motion and thinks it was an unfortunate accident and not a deliberate taking out of someone not involved in the play.
This is exactly what I said watching it live.

16 weeks is ridiculous. But we are talking about the NRL.

I agree if this were Melbourne or roosters the suspension would be much less.

Mitch deserves a stretch, but 16 weeks is laughable when you consider other punishments.

Update: As per this article, the NRL isn't charging him with a set amount of games and allowing him to plea or contest. Instead, they will have him face the judiciary and have his say, then decide the length of his ban.

Frizzel and DSaf saying Barnett wouldn't do it deliberately and they want him to keep playing "with fire".
Article also says he will plead guilty to careless high contact and club has hired a high profile lawyer and will say he had his eyes on the ball runner and Smith ran across his path etc.

Not sure if anyone else has seen the Will Smith slapdown of Chris Rock, but surely that gets referred direct to the NRL judiciary as well
When I heard about it on the radio I thought they said Will Smith slapped The Rock ( Dwayne Johnson ) , and I thought “Will gonna regret that “. He maybe crazy but not that stupid.

If you are going to assault someone (Will Smith) - a few billion witnesses is probably a bad idea.

Slow motion replays always make it look worse,(as most viewers first view of the incident was at slow speed and you first view is always more highly regarded than other viewings) Watch at normal speed with Smith stopping on his run he's got little time to adjust, but the rule is up to the defender to avoid contact.
Sometimes players get in bad positions - but viewers are always quick to judge the players intent.
