I think he got floated on here because he gets dropped and benched a lot, people thinking maybe we could get him out of that deal. And now the Warriors have a bit of a glut of back rowers/locks with Niukore signing there too.

So was Barny until 2023 , but we agreed to let him negotiate elsewhere.
I agree Katoa would be a good option though, but I can’t see the Warriors letting him go.
My preferences would be Crichton or Nikora ,but I agree Matterson seems to come with some baggage. Doesn’t seem too popular with his team mates.
I guess Phil Gardner has organised a like for like swap, just like when Mitch Pearce left

Phil only looks over the paperwork. All the recruitment comes from Clint Zammit.So was Barny until 2023 , but we agreed to let him negotiate elsewhere.

In this new age where hardened forwards of the 1980s and 90s sit in stunned silence when players come flying in from all directions to jumper-grab and push-and-shove, Newcastle forward Mitch Barnett is a throwback to different times.
Barnett had both of his front teeth knocked out against the Gold Coast Titans in round 16.
Not only did Barnett come back on the field after passing an HIA assessment but he’s also planning to back up and play in round 17 on Friday night against South Sydney - still minus the two front Barrier Reef
One of the more bizarre things about the missing teeth, Barnett was wearing a mouth guard - a lot of players don’t these days - yet still had them knocked clean out.
Barnett’s Newcastle teammates have been busy trying to make him crack a smile at and winding up at training this week about how he looks like he’s just done a stretch with some of the Hunter’s finest at Cessnock Correctional Centre.

Barney mooted to be heading back to the Knights to be nearer family with an unwell child. Warriors have granted an early exit from his contract after 2026.
Im sure other clubs will be interested too, namely Broncos, Dogs, Manly , but Newcastle may have the edge because Barneys family is in Taree.
It would be a great signing, because he is now a leader, Origin player, and much improved front rower, compared to when he left us for the Warriors.
Let’s hope it happens because we need some experience and size in the forwards to mentor the good crop of young guys coming through.
