Joel Edwards talks new deal with Knights

Robbie Rochow is set to sign next week as well according to Toohey in the Sunday Herald today.

Rochow is mostly playing lock but he is basically a prop these days, and he seems to be the type Wayne likes - big, hardworking, good hands. He is developing nicely and i think he would be favoured over Tets and O'Donnell because of his higher workrate and safer hands, even if he isn't as athletic and doesn't have the impact of those two.

Good young group of props we have - Rochow, Sims, O'Donnell, Tets, Vaivai and Jeremy Ma'a - all over 190cm and over 105kg and all should be training with firstgrade next season.

Josh - never mind a year ago have a look at forum members best 17 for 2012 prior to round one and see how many didn't have Hilder and Fa'oso in there. When it comes to Richie ask yourself is our go forward good enough to send Richie to the local comp ie did he go bad enough to deserve that. The worst thing people say about him is he can drop a ball well I reckon he's improved a heap in that area in fact he has been offloading as well.

I think it's because they are both pluggers.

Fas having great go forward is a bit of myth. He averages the lest amount of meters of any prop (69m,9 hit ups, 20tackles) compare that with Cuthbo (73m,11 hit ups,26 tackles) until Fas picks up his work rate he will never be a 100m a week prop. When Fas picks up his work rate he will be back in 1st grade.

That really depends on his minutes though, i don't have any idea how many minutes he plays so i can't comment on that, but you should provide both Cuthbo's & Faas' minutes before comparing them to 100m props.

Beaut.

The Earth is flat. That's an example of a myth. Richie takes the ball forward better than anyone else we have that's a fact. I don't need numbers to make my decision for me I just watch defenders being scattered.

Minutes is not a big difference 43 for Cuthbo an 35 for Fas. So about the same workrate although you would have to say with 2 more hit ups fas would probably just go past Cuthbo. Neither has a good enough work rate for first grade and although on the whole stats can be deceiving for a front rower if your not making meters your not making the side.

What story do they stats fail to tell when it comes to Fas? He runs hard but not often enough or have you been happy with the performance of our forward pack?

I've been disappointed in our hole team but when it comes to bench players there's no comparison between Edwards and Richie. If Edwards had dark hair and came from outs town he wouldn't have half as many supporters.

What the stats fail to tell about Richie's m's gained is that every time he takes the ball he's a threat. Quality not quantity.

I agree on Edwards but also I don't think Richie is giving us great quality. If both want to be part of the top 17 for the next few years both need to at the least double there output. In my view when it comes to Fas if he can make another 20m a game his in the side as long as the prop rotation can get this output:
Prop 1(Snowy) 100-140m
Prop 2(Willie) 100-120m
Prop 3(Cuthbo/Fas/Nev) 70-100m
Prop 4(Cuthbi/Fas/Nev) 70-100m

One thing the stats tell is how ordinary Gallen makes some forwards look. Rattled up 169 & 189 in the first 2 games of the year but has topped the 200m mark in every match since. Still if Snowden had the motor to play 80 minutes he'd run up a double ton as well.

You're FACT about Richie isn't any better - it's just an opinion so don't laud it around as if it's ultimate. Good on you with the woman analogy though! We need more real men like you!

Again, Richie's threat rating is just your opinion. You could measure it by his linebreaks and tackle busts though...is he really that good then? ;)

Speaking of Rochow in first-grade, I remember in his debut, in like the first 5 minutes he came on, he made a break right through the line. Just randomly. :p

Stats aren't everything - personally I prefer to go on what I observe a player contributing to the team, rather than narrowing everything down to metres gained, number of hit ups, etc. they don't paint the whole picture on their own.

Maybe I'm old fashioned ... those types of stats are only recent additions to the game.

callumtear - I'd rather be capable of forming an opinion re a player and be wrong than depend on stats to say everything for me. You are right it is my opinion that Richie threatens every time he runs onto the ball but in all honesty I can't remember too many times he takes it up meekly. Compare his hit ups to Houston. Sure according to the stats less everything than Houston but the later is about as threatening as a Boy Scout with a pea shooter. Never off loads and don't beat anybody. I see the ball going to Houston I go and put the kettle on safe in the knowledge nothing will happen. The ball goes to Richie I expect the unexpected. It might be an offload, it might be a powerful charge that scattered a few defenders it might even be a dropped ball which hasn't been the case too often this year. To use a players' saying...at the end of the day I'm playing Coach. Edwards and Hilder either start or aren't in the 17. Richie and or Tetevano on the bench to be used for impact not to keep the statistician busy. If one thinks Richie's work rate isn't good enough then put a rocket under him that's what coaches do especially ones with reputations as big as Bennett's.

Housten may not have the explosiveness of Fa'aoso, but his hit ups on the fringes are usually very strong, and he gets great leg drive after first contact, something that some of our other propers fail at. He is also safe as houses (no pun intended) in both attack and defence.
