Ex-Knights Watch

The sportsmen at highest risk are jockeys.
Most of them have multiple serious concussions over 20 or even 30 year careers from falls in races and even in trackwork.
I did a bit of searching a few years ago and it went something like Jockeys, polo players, boxers and then soccer players who head the ball frequently all ahead of the rugby codes -and american football was pretty high because they use their helmets to butt into each others heads, so they hinder more than they help.

I guess we still don’t know what causes CTE, isn’t there research that indicates repeated small collisions might be just as much to blame? And there’s thousands of them across an NRL career.

I think reducing body sizes in some way would help, does the NFL have a restriction on how many gym sessions players can do or something?

Sorry I’ve heard a lot of stuff third hand and I’m not sure haha.

But I have to say if I ever have kids, no way I’ll be letting them play, and I’m glad I was too much of a tiny kid to ever give it a go myself (don’t worry, I did eventually grow to normal height 😂)
I was under the impression that they thought it was it was repeated impacts *after* a severe concussion which caused CTE. Not giving any recovery time. Sort of like jamming a knife into a flesh wound repeatedly before it had properly healed. And that that’s why it’s actually more common in American football players than boxers, especially with how quickly boxing referees have been stopping fights since the 90’s, relative to how long they let them go on in the bad old days - the fight stops when someone’s bell gets really badly rung and then there tends to be weeks and weeks before the next bout.

Fatigue makes head knocks far more likely though. The peak PVLball, peak fatigue season in 2021 had something like more than twice as many cat 1 concussions as any other season since we started taking it more seriously. You actually want less fatigue if you want fewer head knocks.

The really unpopular thing the NRL could do to reduce head impacts is to get rid of kick-offs…
The nrl could nearly go down the path similar to union with a short drop out for kick offs which then takes out the car crash off the kick off

Mitchell Pearce announced on Instagram yesterday that he will retire at the end of the season. He has been playing with the Catalan Dragons.

He played 71 NRL games for the Knights in a total of 309 NRL games. Pearce has played 19 games for the Blues and 37 games for the Catalan Dragons.

Just replying to this very old post given the thread has been resurfaced.

While there isn't a perfect understanding of cause/severity, most of the current evidence suggests quite clearly that it's even minor "repeated traumatic brain injuries" (aka anything that causes contact between brain and skull) that lead to longer-term degenerative brain issues. A concussion is a symptom, not something that in itself causes further damage.

@HVG, you're partly right in saying that impacts post-concussion are worse, but that's more because being concussed is a sign that there has been a detrimental build-up of impact, rather than the concussion itself being the cause of later damage.

I love this sport, but my kids will never be allowed to play it.

Daughter is saying twitter? I'm not on there, so can't verify.
Nah he hasn’t mentioned it on there. But Barnett was on the Toohey’s News podcast this week … he mentioned medical retirement might be something that happens, but it’s far from certain and will depend on if he continues to improve. So maybe some wires getting crossed there.
