Ex-Knights Watch

Article about Lachlan Walmsley being named English championship player of the year, scoring 36 tries in 26 games for Halifax.
I can't remember exactly which grade he played in for the Knights - a bit of Flegg and a bit of reserve grade I think. He was a very handy winger/centre. He made the interesting choice to pass up another season of reserve grade at Knights to try to earn a spot for Scotland in the WC by playing in the championship. He had a very successful WC as one of Scotland's best, and has now done well enough in the championship to probably get offers from ESL clubs next year.

Peter Mata’utia has decided to retire.

Pete is expected to play in the real NRL. He has 5 clubs interested in signing him.
Some of his kids should be nearly old enough to play soon.

From Toohey's news September 30th

Clubs vying for Mata'utia

We're hearing as many as five local Newcastle clubs have been in talks with former Knights and Dragons centre Peter Mata'utia for next season following news Warrington will not be extending his current deal in the English Super League.

Close - but not quite right . Walmsley played for South Lions in 2018 when they won the comp . He was easily the standout player in the competition . Knights showed no interest , and he signed with Rabbitohs suffering a season ending injury early in the following season . Returned to Newcastle and played for Lions in the Covid affected season when they made the GF again , beaten by Cessnock . With no interest shown by the Knights he decided to go to UK , and has scored close to 60 tries in the past 2 years in their second division . How he was not taken back into the Knights system in 2019 is a 'mystery' to say the least ...

Don't know how mysterious it is if English second division was the best offer he got. Sounds like 15 other teams + all of Super League weren't interested either

Mystery was referring to 2019 . he was good but doubt Super League clubs were looking at recruiting from the local league back then

Cooper Jenkins and Luke Pietzner from lower grades both signed for Norths Devils in QLD cup
I hope Parr knows what he is doing.
He has let a lot of guys with potential go.
The lower grade turnover is crazy.
Good luck to the reserve grade coach - at this rate it will be mostly 18 year olds.

Jenkins being starting prop so often NSW Cup was a failure on the club's part but with Bryan back and Croker possibly missing the top 17 he would now be bouncing between local league and the bench for reserve grade so makes sense for him to leave. Depth in the middle is still a concern but Jenkins wasn't the answer. Pietzner played 1 game of Cup this year and wouldn't be in the top handful of eligible outside backs for next season even before considering the NRL squad players dropping back. Got better wing prospects around the same age already under contract.

Good luck to them, won't be losing sleep over either.

Agree. Looking forward to seeing the squads named for next yr. Cup and Flegg will be quite interesting. From a few articles and interviews be a mixture of best of local league and some QCup talent, after Dobson influence. Both teams need to perform next yr though and from here on in.
