Ex-Knights Watch

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I’m not sure why we didn’t try to keep Mick Meany and play him on the wing. He would have sloted right into full back with all the Ponga injuries. I think dogs offered something we weren’t willing to pay?
from memory we tried to keep Meaney but we had just signed Ponga, so we would have played him on the wing or reserve grade fullback.

The Dogs came along and offered him a chance at fullback which we couldn't offer. We actually let him go so as to not get in the way of his career.

In hindsight, what we should have done is get him back when the Dogs didn't want him. Not sure if we tried or not and probably didn't see him improving so much either

I would rather Miller than Meaney, I would rather take Hoy back as well for that matter, he isn't very good. He looks.. just OK in a good Melbourne side.

Meaney is quite good on the wing, but has always wanted to play fullback despite just not having the tools you need to really excel there at NRL level. The white Alex Johnston.

I thought he had a great game last night, one of the best on the field, scored a great try off a King offload. Just goes to show what being in a professional system with great coaching can do for players. The Storm have a way of making average players at other clubs look like world beaters.

You know Obi was in the Storm system?😀Thought some of it might have rubbed off

Meaney was awful at the dogs, no one wanted him back after his stint there.
To be fair he is a good footballer , never going to be a star . But in most cases will do a job for you . The supporters on the "kennel" are a bitter & twisted lot . The way we are going it will be us in a couple of years😀

He played well. Not denying that.

Meaney was a very slow developer. When he went from under 20s to reserves it was very clear he wasn't strong enough for seniors.
I'd argue that he wasn't really strong enough for seniors till he did a Melbourne pre-season. He was always fast, but a string bean with rubber bands for muscles.

FORMER KNIGHT ON TOP OF THE WORLD
There was no happier player after round one than former Knight turned Warrior Mitchell Barnett.

Barnett switched camps over the summer in far from happy circumstances and was telling mates all off-season that he wanted nothing more than a win over his former team.

Barnett's Warriors teammates delivered and the talented forward played a key role in the first round win in Wellington.

A battle-hardened player who knows what it takes to win big games, Barnett looks a great fit for the Warriors and could be one of the buys of the year.

Really, as we all know he was the player who cost us the game with Penrith last year and our season then went off the rails.

The fact that Josh King, Nick Meaney, Zac Hosking etc are lauded as the "ones that got away" should tell you everything about how good our local juniors are.

Come on guys. The ones who got away are Joe Tapine and Hudson Young. The genuine matchwinners. Arguably Boyd Cordner and Latrell as well. Who gives a **** about those other guys. Squad filler.

Don't deny he wouldn't tie those guys shoelaces . Was referring to the guy getting out of his comfort zone moving to a new system . Prolonged his NRL career . Can't say he doesn't look a better player .Stayed in Newcastle he would be back working in the mines & playing for Maitland . The way our depth is prob could have used him sooner or later!
