We signed a dynamic, skillful playmaker, to get a massive, massive upgrade in a role. Not necessarily a “position” in the classic sense you would say for players like Reynolds and Fogarty, who are pure halfbacks. A role - Dylan may be listed as a 6 or as a 7, it does not matter - within a system unique to the club, which we’ve previously been filling with limited replacement level halves.
Jonah Pezet is not the same player as Dylan Brown - he’s quick but hasn’t been a constant threat to break the line - but he does some of the same things naturally well. Plays straight and creates space, good pass selection, naturally understands angles etc. Pezet’s main individual attacking impact is from his short kicking game (he doesn’t really have a big boot tbh, pretty clearly this is low on the list of things our coaching staff care most about), whereas with Dylan it would be more in his running and passing games. But in a broad sense, they both do a lot of the things we want in that role very well.
It’s really as simple as that. I just don’t think they think they need a 30+ year old 7 to whip everyone into shape. The team is well-drilled. Kalyn is better at reading the game and picking the play than half the halfbacks in the comp. Keep the actual halves responsibilities for Dylan relatively simple, just let him play his natural game, and he’ll flourish.
