Yep, I hope Phoenix plays out his career here. I was one of very few who defended his re-signing a few years ago. Kid is all heart, all effort, all energy. Can cover multiple positions. Your perfect 14, and probably wouldn’t cost us more than $500k.

Same ive always been a big admirer of his. You can’t beat heart and he has it in spades.
 
The longer it goes the cheaper his % of the salary cap and more combinations and gameplan will grow and become second nature. Stability and belonging can build a lot of growth.

I said weeks ago, if we win one or two Premierships with Dylbaaaaassgs then it’s worth it.

To be clear, I like Phoenix a lot too. We’re in a good spot with the 9 jersey no matter which direction the club goes in. He was at hooker all of 2023 so he’s proven as someone who can do that job in a great attacking team. He gets clean ball to our strike players and his defence is close to as good as it gets. There’s a very good chance Phoenix will be the guy AOB wants to stick with long term & Arthur is just someone who’s only at the club while he’s still on a cheap deal, unless Matt is truly special.

I feel like in order to really get to that next level we need a quality crafty hooker, Arthur appears to be that player. D looks solid. But let's be honest, hard to beat Crossy in that regard.

Given our lack of quality forwards maybe we would do better with Crosslands profile? But in reality I think its quite likely that we'll see a marked improvement in the offensive play with Arthur, and better overall results particularly in defence due to those advantages, despite the fact that yes, Crossland is objectively the better defender.

The key will be having that 1-2 punch really. It would be great if Arthur turns into that constant dummy half running threat similar to what Cook was.

Il admit i havnt seen a great deal of arthur but im not sure he will be that sort of hooker from what ive seen. Strikes me as a hooker whos best asset is between his ears.
 
Yep think Api or Blayke Brailey for Matt Arthur. A guy who gets forwards over the ad line, sends markers the wrong way, etc. but won’t end the season with much of a highlight reel to his name.

The good news is that this kind of hooker tends to be underrated and underpaid. Brailey I don’t think makes more than $600K even though he may be Cronulla’s best spine player - so many people haven’t caught up to how good he is yet & still think he’s bleh. Api is earning his highest ever salary now and it’s still only $700K (reported), it took so long for people to realise he’s not just good but elite.

Also a style which tends to age very well as these guys get more and more experience.

Conversely, there can be some early career growing pains for guys like this because it’s hard to execute subtle and technical stuff out of dummy half under fatigue. So I think the club will try to bring him along slowly. Building the ability to play big minutes in NSW Cup & familiarity with guys we expect to be key players for us like Hopwood is probably the best thing for now.
