2025 Recruitment And Retention

Melbourne haven't done anything wrong by him. He's playing to the contract he signed. The fact that he may get better opportunities and money elsewhere is not mistreatment. Imagine the uproar if we released Dom a year early because he felt he'd been hard done by.
My point was he is under no obligation to stay at the Storm beyond 2025 and because it appears there is no reasonable prospect of him being a regular in first grade during the next few years, he should sign elsewhere so he can play first grade regularly.

I guess it will depend on whether the Storm are confident Hughes will re-sign or not. Surely they can’t expect Pezet to sit around waiting forever.

On the other hand if they are worried about him leaving I can see why they’d be so keen to keep Pezet

He can sign with us for 2026 and by doing that let them know he is not happy with the way he is being treated.
Why sign with us for 2026 when he can stay at the Storm and get a 'lend' deal ... by 2027 they're likely to have him playing NRL for them. Same as they did with Harry Grant.

They won't give him an early release. Why would they? The good clubs play the ball not the man.
The circumstances are such that it would almost be unprofessional for them to deny a release to a young, 4th string half, who has played 7 games in 3 seasons and unlikely to play in 2025.

It would look so ugly they'd have no choice but to release him.

Though, they'll pretend they're keeping him around while they negotiate the contract

Leo’s situation is different. He can obtain an immediate upgrade by resigning with us and he is playing first grade whereas Pezet isn’t a regular first grader and may not be a regular first grader for years to come.

I was more referring to the fact if either signs elsewhere for 2026 that neither club is under an obligation to let them out of their said contracts for 2026.

The balls in Melbourne's court for 25. Doesn't need any more explanation, other than 'you're contracted to us and we expect you to honour your contract'.

Jumping the gun though.... still have him re-signing.

Unlikely to play, so injury is bad, form is bad, no room to fit him in during 2025, if so can’t understand all the hype.
Looks like we are not getting him until at least 2026 and we are not sure if his injuries will curb his ability.
If he and his Manager are aware we are interested they will come calling when the Storm saga is settled until then what we have will have to do unless someone’s circumstances suddenly change.

If we sign him, he'll be here in 25'

Almost guaranteed.

The NRL isn't the NFL. Clubs operate with a duty of care for players, especially younger players who are living remotely from family. It's not a formality, it's a cultural informality that EVERYONE within the club system takes very seriously. The only time clubs enforce contracts (in this context) is when that player is likely to play a key strategic role for the team. If Wishart wasn't there then I'd probably expect them not to release Pezet.

It’s not like Pezet is in any type of distress at the Storm. He’s also a young bloke living in one of the biggest cities in the country, it’s not like he’s being kept hostage from his family in the middle of nowhere. Only way we’d get him early is if there’s something in it for the Storm, I.e. there’s someone we have they’d take as a trade or they need cap space for 2025. Literally no other reason they’d let him go unless he was upset but there’s no indication he is.

If I'm Pezet, and I sign with the Knights for circa $650k p.a. to start as the halfback I am without question distressed by the refusal of my current club to permit my release when the alternative is to play QLD Cup and be paid a minimum top 30 salary.

Yea, I'm absolutely carrying on over that. Like a pork chop. Until the situation becomes sufficiently distasteful such that the club loses the appetite for the negligible benefit they have in holding me hostage.

And no, I don't feel bad about it because I'm a 21 aspiring FGr and life makes no promises for my future. I've dreamed of this since I was a small child. The Storm will probably the comp with or without me.

Pezet's father was a recruitment guy.
I kind of blame Pezet for his entire generation of young Knights being aware that they needed to chase opportunities.
There are members of that Mathews side at Melbourne, Sharks, Dolphins, Canberra, Souths, Parra - everywhere except the Knights.

Pezet is chasing his best opportunity.
He knows he has o look after himself.
We are offering him a great opportunity.
If Melbourne can match it, he'll probably stay.

Yet, Pezet is still trying to get a deal done to stay at the Storm... He played 10 NRL games this year for the Storm and will play NRL again next year.

The Storm are smart enough to know the value of depth in their top 30, and Pezet is in their plans beyond 2025.

It’s 10 games over the last 2 years.
