For those who think sticking with selections no matter what is a good thing, NZ have selected Tim Southee for his final test today. He has played 11 tests in 2024 and taken 15 wickets at 61.7, and that's when taking the new ball every single time.
He could probably have played to 100 and not been dropped.
Nathan Smith who has made an impressive start to test cricket has been dropped with Santner coming in because Hamilton takes some spin.
He was great up until last season, when he declined quite quickly ... as you say, pace was way down and he was actually struggling to get the ball through to the keeper last season vs Australia. If the series was still alive he may of been dropped? nz dont have anything to play for really so it kinda makes sense to give him a fairwell. Seems he has gone on for a little to long. you cant really be effective at test level bowling mid 120s with the new ball.

I'd say the series being over is the perfect chance to take som risks with selection and give some new players a chance. Not many tests coming up, I think there's 2 tests in Zimbabwe and West Indies playing 3 tests in NZ next season, and that's it for the next one and a half years.
If I was Southee I wouldn't want to hold young players back if I had that sort of recent record.
England look in all sorts.Good fight back from England after a strong start from the Kiwis.
You just love to see it don’t you?England look in all sorts.
