2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Whether it’s a year early or it’s for 2024, Jackson is probably our most realistic recruitment target who can help us get better.

I reckon that Tigers board is just never gonna give up on Brooks. Playing Hastings at lock isn’t gonna help them hold him. He’ll do it, but he wants to play halfback.

Asi would probably fit well alongside him too as an out-and-out attacking half rather than any sort of organiser.

Greg Marzhew is who I would target as Lees replacement, although some of you on here don’t rate him.
Stats this year:
12 Games
7 Tries
81 Tackle breaks
157 Average metres

The guy can attack there's no douting that but he is lazy in defence we have enough of that going around lately already. I dont see him contributing positively to our culture.

He's certainly not being entirely truthful.

He gets a say in the players that get targeted, but not with the contract negotiation.

It would be madness to think any coach doesn’t have some sort of input. Might not get what they want, but they would have their say.

He’s not running recruitment, but there’s something seriously wrong if they’re not talking to each other.

Mind you this is the knights, left arm probably has no idea what the right one is doing.

AOB is in over his head as a coach alone, having him in charge of recruitment as well is how you get panic buys, like Milford almost was. He should be one voice in a small group of people making recruitment decisions, and certainly should not be the one negotiating with players. Think that is the case at most clubs.

Fast forward to next year with Clune and Clifford in the halves and we may well be wishing we signed Milford.

Yeah I don't think we're better off without Milford. If we ended up signing someone like Hastings then sure that would be good, but who knows what they're thinking. They might think Clifford and Clune will still come good as a pair with another pre-season, which would be very Knights like to go into another season based off pure hope.

It would be nice if we could get a true halves leader for 2023, but it’s very unlikely. Clune has gone okay and the chances of getting a better player are low. Brooks is having a worse season than Clune.

Big part of our problem this year has been the quality of the back-up players when a key player goes down though. Chris Randall is just not a 60 minute hooker let alone an 80 minute one, we needed a better reserve 9 all year. This should be a priority.

Whatever we might say about Clune and Clifford’s play, when you watch them in reserve grade they’re a clear cut above everyone else on the field. So trying to get a clearly better half for next year is a non-starter - barring unforeseen movement in the player market, there isn’t one. But behind them our backup 7 Crossland doesn’t even look that good in NSW Cup, Hoy is a good reserve grade player but not a standout. Reserve halves who’ll genuinely put pressure on Clune & Clifford is another priority, in my opinion, and we can do this while also trying to land a big fish for 2024 or 25.

The complacency of the club on these counts has been our biggest failure in recruitment, in my opinion. The addiction to utilities is ridiculous - “utility” is just code for “not good enough in any position to lock one down” - and puts way too much pressure on other spine players to carry the slack.
