2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

A young half with talent? Would make too much sense for us to try to sign him, so we won’t.

In all seriousness, the Warriors feel like the opposite of us in so many ways. They tinker with the roster and churn through players as much as we just sit on our hands lol. They have even bigger problems with attitude and cohesion than us, but because they don’t just let sit there with their thumb up their collective arse, their spine depth leaves ours for dead:

Hooker: Wayde Egan, Freddy Lussick, Taniela Otukolu

Halves: Shaun Johnson, Chanel Harris-Tavita, Ashley Taylor, Daejarn Asi, Ronald Volkman, have already signed Luke Metcalf for next year

Fullback: Reece Walsh and 3-4 guys who can fill in there if needed, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad signed to replace departing Reece Walsh

Now, obviously the guy they thought was the future in CHT and a guy they took a punt on in Ash haven’t worked out. But they are already prepared to replace them.

Obvs Brailey is better than Egan, KP is better than Walsh or CNK and Shaun Johnson’s physical decline has made him no better than Clune or Milf atm… but Asi, Volkman and Metcalf are all much better prospects than the likes of Crossland and Hoy (and probably Clifford given what a head case he appears to be), and Lussick & Otukolu aren’t great but they’re at least genuine #9’s rather than utilities who aren’t good at the basics.

Not advocating for copying the Warriors because they also suck, but maybe a middle ground between constant wheeling & dealing and total complacency would be nice. Expecting Chris Randall to fill in for Brailey for 3/4 of a season and doing nothing at all to lighten the load is just malpractice.

Does anyone know if Elliot is going to be playing lock for us? He’s been very good there this year and he’s much better than Mann.

Wo

Would make too much sense, will probably play back row because Mann is the best 13 alive.
Yeah I’m just hoping we sack AOB, there are much better coaching options.
. Woolf: St Helen’s are just a level above anyone else in the SL, has won back to back GFs as coach.
. Potter: Improved dogs in a matter of weeks, imagine what he could do with our roster over one pre-season
. Flanagan: Premiership winner.

Nathan Brown won a super league title.

The Bulldogs are still coming 14th.

Flanagan hasn’t coached at NRL level in 4 years.

I’m just sayin’…
St Helen’s are the Panthers of the SL

Mick Potter has only been coaching for 5 weeks and you can’t deny the Dogs have improved heaps. The dogs scored around 90 points in 11 games under Baz, it took 4 weeks for Potter to pass that.

Flanagan is a risk but is a proven NRL coach.

Anyways, Hastings is playing lock and Kimmorley has come out and said that he will be there for the rest of the year.
Fine by me, considering he wants to play Halfback he may now push for a release. And as we all know we need a halfback with a voice.

Well there you go.

There’s no reasonable prospect of finding a better #7 than Adam Clune for next year so I’d go into the off-season assuming he’ll be starting there. Time to start thinking about signing someone for 2024 and I think the chances of picking up a better player than Jackson Hastings are very low.

I suspect the Will Pryce thing is still on but I hope their club doesn’t sit on their hands. I’ve been impressed by what I’ve seen from Daejarn Asi, @cowboyman was there any particular reason he struggled to get game time for North Queensland?

No 6 in reserves, do we have one in Flegg, can we develop one that will be better than Clifford and lets not forget 7, Clune does his best but without a top class 6 will struggle week in week out.
Thought Mapapalangi was a 5/8 but we haven’t been playing in that position in reserves, why???

Anybody else notice the young Tigers winger Junior Tupou? Rugby union background and looks to be a real talent. With the Tigers having Maumalo and Nofoaluma if we offer Tupou a starting wing spot (replacing Lee) I think that we could have one of the greatest wing pairings in a few years or maybe even next year if Tupou improves as much as Dom did in his second pre-season.

Can’t blame Milford, coached by Wayne and a team with plenty of upside or stay with perennial underachiever’s knights and be coached by a coach in Obrien who seems to be unable to improve players.

There is no upside at the Dolphins..... Milford is from Brisbane and knows Wayne can get the best out of him so that would've made his decision easier, but the playing roster at the Dolphins is pretty bad.

First year they will struggle but second and third year they will be a lot stronger. Knights will still be mediocre
