2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

Turpin’s work out of dummy half is pretty dire too.

Dunno how things will shake out at the Titans, but if the Knights are looking to pursue an off contract 9, Leeming is the one who can give us the smarts and skill out of dummy half we need.

Don’t know about Leeming but he is playing behind Randall?

As there is no "quality" hookers on the horizon. We need to stick with Phoniex and Mann or Reiley Jones, Rugless, for the rest of the year. Crossland is contracted till the end of next year. So, he and Reiley Jones are your backup hookers to Brailey. Brailey is still signed till the end of 25. He is a "quality" hooker, much better than all that has been suggested.

I don't see the point in signing some stop-gap, average hooker. If there was a quality hooker off contract that we could get then great, but there isn't.

I think a stop-gap would be useful if Crossland/Mann were injured. We really don't have much first grade-ready depth behind Brailey.

If they go into 2024 with Brailey and those backups all the club is saying is that they're happy to throw the season away (again) if Brailey gets injured (again).

He has a player option for next year, we could be in a worse place than we are this year if he does sign somewhere else.

I wouldn't be touching anyone and helping them dig them out of their mess, they made their bed and they can lie in it.

Maybe it ends up they can't even register doms contract.
Not really digging them out of their own ness when most of those players are off contract anyway. Basically saying the Roosters won’t be re-signing them.

I think we're overstating the depth of hookers in the league here, it's one of the weakest positions in the comp and it is somewhat rare to have two first-grade quality hookers on the books.

Storm, Sharks, Manly, Dolphins, Roosters, Bulldogs, Tigers, are all in the same boat as us - that's about half the comp.

The club absolutely put themselves in the dirt by having the backup as a guy who is learning the position on the fly in first-grade, but after another year of Crossland learning and Jones likely putting himself in the frame we will end up on par with pretty much every other team in the comp for backups.

If we can snare someone who will immediately demand a spot on the bench and push Brailey for minutes then by all means pick them up, but signing another reserve-grader who barely pips Crossland/Jones then it's a waste of a top 30 spot. Looking at the list of off-contract 9s this year the chance of us getting one in the former category is pretty slim, because basically don't exist outside of possibly Leeming/Soni Luke and both of those aren't established in any case.

I don't think Riley Jones will be happy to settle for playing hooker.
He is very tall for a hooker and has the potential to be a top quality running 5/8.
The only reason we are trying to turn him into a specialist hooker is because we need one.

Leeming is the man! With Verrils back he will be third string hooker at the Titans and he only signed for this season. I reckon we should make a play for him this season to play 14. Playing Crossland for 80 mins is not a valid strategy. It shows in the last 15 mins or so when we should be putting our foot down for the win he is gassed and we lose a lot of momentum at the ruck.

I saw a short clip on Facebook of Matty Johns talking (not sure if podcast or for radio). He was still banging on about Luke Brooks to Newcastle. His tip is either Bulldogs or Knights and that both teams need him. Is he playing with himself or what?
