2023 Recruitment & Retention Thread

I love Knights fans and their opinions on coaches. For those that don't follow regularly I'll give a brief synopsis;

Adam O'Brien - can't coach and must go.
Nathan Brown - can't coach and must go.
Wayne Bennett - can't coach and must go.
Rick Stone - can't coach and must go.
Brian Smith - can't coach and must go.
Michael Hagan - can't coach and must go, and can't administer the club and must go....

I sense a pattern... My guess, who ever does eventually replace AOB won't be able to coach and will have to go!

I'm hopeful of seeing more of Bailey hodgeson next year. Even in the centres. I think there is some potential there in young, hodgeson, Pryce and KPP.

To be honest a bit of competition between hodgeson and Pryce for the fullback gig should be good.

Re: brooks I think he is ok. No Nathan Cleary but a NRL standard halfback. Hope we didn't overpay.

Youngs going to be an interesting one. Great talent but the best teams seem to throw the big $$$ at 1,6,7 and 9 not wingers, front rowers etc. Hope we don't overpay.

AOB is a loser. Wtf are players like Keighran and Atkinson going to do for us? Aside from take up cap space and ensure we go sideways, as a best case.

We need to be targeting one or two marquee players, poached, traded, stolen who gives a fk. And that needs to happen every single off season until we've got a team that can win. Sick of the idiotic hopefulness that is keeping players like Mann and Tuala at the club. They are a pipedream. No top serious top 8 club would have either of them on the roster let alone the starting 13.

How you win premierships:

Gamble with talented players. Hope that junior development and a minority of journeyman can support for injuries as rotation players. And if you get a run without injuries the standard of the juniors and journeyman increases by default of the difficulty of breaking into the 17.
mate you win premierships with talent and depth. You can't keep targeting marquee players. If you do that you end up with at best maybe 4 top marquee players and the rest will be fringe first grade style players. You won't win much as coaches will exploit the weaknesses and there will be plenty

We currently seem to have over paid in our forwards and for our fullback, which means we now don't have the money for depth.

Guys like Fitz, Mann need to be off loaded now. Guys like Klemmer, Gagai, Frizell and Ponga are all over paid. Fix up the cap and you can then work on depth.

Agree we need to develop our juniors because you can't keep buying players as it costs too much, which again affects the salary cap and the depth

Question, how do you think the Storm have enjoyed so much success? They certainly dont pay top dollar for every member of their 17.

It requires good fortune but the only way to build a premiership winning team is to spend big on a core of maybe 4 players worthy of marquee and long-term contracts. Then populate the squad with juniors and journeyman who, given the right conditions, can become good or great players.

You can't just 'buy' talent and depth unless you're the Roosters. You need to create it.

The Knights have one marquee player in Ponga. Outside of him there really isn't anyone worth more than about $400-$600k p.a. and strangely, most of them seem to be on about that amount.

The balance needs to be more inequitable in order to create the conditions for success imo. More people on upwards of $1m and more people on closer to $300k (juniors and bargain buys that hopefully hit form) not unlike the Cowboys tbh

I will never stop being a Knights supporter but its frustrating we are in this position and have been for a long time, not a top side. We have a huge nursery of players to bring through the ranks. We arguably have one of the loyalist and largest fan bases. We should be a strong development club like the Panthers are now. Maybe get GUS over!

i don't understand why people are suggesting Dom play fullback. Has he ever played there?

Also his hands are terrible under a bomb

Agree we need to keep him, but he is a winger. If you want him involved more, watch what the Roosters do with Manu and apply that. Give Dom a license to roam the field
He's a winger now but he was a centre whether he has played f/back before i have no idea but it wouldn't take long at training for the coaches to know if he can handle it.. Also i thought his hands were good and especially under the high ball ..

i saw that play and i get he wont get that service from how we currently play, but that's no reason to move him to fullback.

What we should be doing is developing that kind of play
Thats not a reason to move him to f/back and im not saying we should but give him a go and see how he goes at training if he looks good there then move him as imo he could be bloody good if he cant handle it then spend the money we apparently dont have and buy a f/back .
..

Young is a very young player who is still developing.
2 years ago he came here as a centre and was moved to wing.
He didn't take long to learn the skills for that.
He's a smart guy - easily smart enough to play a spine position a follow a game plan.
The only real barrier to him giving fullback a try is fitness.
Good fullbacks run for 80 minutes and are always ready to sprint to support a line break, so they need to be super fit.
I'd say his fitness improved a lot last year, but he'd need to get to another level.
