If stone gets the nod who would he appoint as his assistants and training staff as Bennett is taking most of his crew back to brisbane ?

I still don't get the fascination with Stone. Why does him staying on a "promise" of Bennett's role at the end-of-days make him the best coach for Newcastle? Is he actually the best man for the job? There are plenty of options out there with more NRL experience - or are we just shooting ourselves in the foot by being parochial and demanding a Newcastle connection as one of the must-have criteria?
I'm sort of the opposite, unless it's going completely pear-shaped, I think we need to give whoever we end up choosing a good three or four year go at it.
I think part of our problem as a club is we are constantly changing coaches, the playing roster gets turned on its head every couple of years and there's no chance to build towards anything as a team.

I'd like to think he will give an assistant coaching job to Sandercock, who was one of his previous assistants and has recently lost his head coaching spot in the ESL.
Both of them have a similar view to using as much modern sports science knowledge as they can in their coaching, and Sandercock has a good knowledge of every player in the ESL at present, so if any of them are worth targeting, he will know.
A head coach whose team struggles in NSW Cup and an assistant that has lost his job in the Super League hardly fills me with confidence. I still have visions of the Mounties scoring a thousand tries down Mantellato's edge and Stone didn't have any answers.

Stone has done an excellent job with the NSW cup side for the last two years.
A high injury toll has left him with a side that wouldn't be out of place in the real NRL at times, but i'd say he has won most of the games he should have won and has improved a lot of players over that two years. A good number of them have gone to other clubs, but the squad last year started as a bunch of young guys and a few fringe firstgraders, and would have gone very close to winning the comp if not for 3 or 4 of the best playing finals for firstgrade.
This year he has a much weaker squad, but the young guys are getting better and better and they are starting to win consistantly.

Newcastle Knights officials meet to decide on new coach to replace Wayne Bennett
NEWCASTLE Knights officials will meet on Thursday to decide whether to appoint an emerging or experienced coach to replace Wayne Bennett next season or take a punt on a rookie.
It’s understood a shortlist of contenders has been drawn up in the two categories with a decision to be made first on what type of coach the club should opt for before the merits of individuals are considered.
Former coach Rick Stone remains favourite and seems certain to be appointed next week if officials decide to play it safe by going with experience.
But should they vote to hire a rookie, the likes of Garth Brennan, Terry Matterson, Brett Kimmorley and Trent Barrett would then come into the frame.
Knights CEO Matt Gidley has consistently said a contender with a Newcastle background who understands the city is a preferred qualification.
But he softened that stance on Tuesday, saying a prospective new coach doesn’t necessarily have to come from Newcastle.
“I think we need someone who has an understanding Newcastle and the relationship between the club and the city but that doesn’t mean they have to come from here,” Gidley said.
“What we will do first is decide on whether we should appoint an emerging or experienced coach, someone who has coached at the level before or we go for an up and coming guy.
“Once we have agreed on that, we’ll look at the shortlist in that category and make a decision on how we take it forward.
“Hopefully, we’ll be in a position to make a decision by the end of next week.”

Terry Matterson would have to be the 'oldest' rookie about. And he did coach the Worriers.

Matterson actually coached Castleford and the USA Tomahawks in last years Rugby League World Cup so he's experienced.
I also don't understand what the fascination is with Stone.
Seriously hope he doesn't get it as he isn't really a good coach. We managed to scrape into the finals when he was in charge and the NSW cup teams aren't setting the world on fire.
Give Brennan a crack or someone experienced like Sheens or Henry.

Our 2011 forward pack had Steve Southern and Antonio Kaufusi, and we still managed to make the finals, if we can sign some decent props, with a squad that is definately top 8 quality Stone will shine.

The thing is though, will our team go back to being reserve grade standard under Stone? I'm not convinced he has the ability to sign these good props that we desperately need, I can see him using his NSW Cup mates and bringing in a few fringe players as our big recruits. Also, will players like Gagai, Leilua, even our rookies want to stick with Stone, he doesn't strike me as one who would fight off competition tooth and nail and make damn sure our players stay. Alot you already know what to expect with Stone, with Brennan, you just don't know and I like that, it could be the best gamble we've made.

brennan is a bigger nobody than stone. if your reason for wanting him as coach is to lure big name players you will be sorely disappointed.

What he did last year with the NSW Cup squad was pretty phenomenal. He hasn't really ever had a promising roster to work with as well, especially in his brief time as head coach.
I would be quite content with Brennan or Stone, but because Stone has 'been there done that' I can 100% understand why fans would want a fresh faced coach. Either way I'm expecting a better brand of football under whoever they decide. But I really think Stone can get a lot more out of this current squad for next year, and provide better results.

Bennett has done no better than Stone with our front row recruitment in his time here, which is kinda sad when you think about it. It's really just a guessing game and I have doubts that Brennan could do any better. If anything there is a bigger question mark with recruitment if Brennan signs.

I wasn't comparing Stone to Bennett, I'm just saying it's pretty much expected Stone won't be bringing in anyone worthwhile (my opinion) while Brennan, you just don't know, he could have strong ties with McKendry, Peachy, Segeyaro or anyone else at Penrith, we don't know what pulling power Brennan has while we know from past events Stone has very little (hopefully that's changed a bit now). You expect players won't be attracted to a rookie coach, but the unknown of Brennan and what he can offer us is interesting and I'll happily take the gamble on him.
But then you know Stone will have the full support of the current squad and he has full knowledge of our lower grade players and we possibly could use that to our advantage and create a booming young local side under Stone. Both I'm sure will be capable coaches, I have no concern with either but recruitment and retention is a major part and whoever who does it better will have my vote.
