2013 NRL Player Rumours & Signings

It honestly seems like Gould & Cleary are making the place worse, but who knows, maybe it'll work out & they'll be successful.
 
It was made clear that the old management stuffed the cap up and over paid every one. So id say they are trying to fix that up
 
Im glad the NRL didnt let the Eels sign him that is cheating what they where going to do with the 100 a year then back up next year.
 
Yeah but asking your 4 biggest influential players to take paycuts, getting rid of club legends & accepting releases for promising future stars, then buying a whole squads worth of new players does not seem the right way to fix it.

Imagine Bennett getting rid of Gidley & Mullen, asking Boyd, Mason, Scott & J.Smith to take paycuts then buying like 15 fringe first-graders. The place would go insane.

I think Penrith just need to slowly weed out players each year, get the big stars to sign new lesser contracts or get rid of them when they are actually off-contract. But instead they are trying to overhaul the squad in 1 year which isn't great for the fans, but you never know, it might yet work out.

Just on Folau, why the hell does Gasnier get to sign a small contract for his first year but Folau doesn't? It's practically the same situation, the NRL can't even keep their off the field rules consistent.
 
If Parra signed Folau to a small contract next year and then upped it in future years, then they'd have to get rid of players in future years to allow that. I'm really struggling to see how that's wrong?

Surely it should be the club and players decisions?
 
Id like to know how they can afford folau anyway. Hopoate 500-800K a year, Sandow 550K a year. Hayne 500K+ a year. Who else do they have on big contracts for 2014?? That would have been Over half there cap gone on 4 players in 2014

I agree. I don't see a problem with players signing back ended deals to play for a club they want to play for! It shouldn't be up to the NRL to decide on there Worth. It should be up to the players and Clubs...

There's nothing wrong with it, the NRL have allowed those exact situations happen in the past. Must be the new commission board, deciding to rule it out from now on for some stupid reason.

They would just had to get rid of a heap of players i guess, not good for their squad depth, but if you want a big star like that badly, that's what you gotta do.

NSW Waratahs on verge of signing Israel Folau in $1 million deal to play Super Rugby

Israel Folau is a strong chance to go to Super Rugby's Waratahs.

THE NSW Waratahs are on the verge of securing a $1 million coup after emerging as the dark horse to sign Israel Folau.

In the wake of the collapse of Folau's NRL return with Parramatta, rugby union is in position to pounce.

Branded a money-hungry mercenary after rejecting a deal to join the Eels, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal that Folau's agent Isaac Moses has been in secret talks with the Waratahs and a deal could be announced by the middle of next week.

Waratahs chief executive Jason Allen was guarded about the prospect of any deal with Folau being done, but he confirmed that the Super 15 franchise had one spot vacant on the playing roster for next season.

"We're always interested in quality players and we do have a large portion of our roster off contract in 2014, so we're talking to a number of agents on a regular basis," Allen said.

"Beyond that, our policy is that we don't make public comment about individual contracts."

For the Super 15 outfit and rugby union in Australia, Folau's signature should be seen as a major celebration and a huge money-spinning opportunity in terms of new memberships, crowd figures, television ratings and interest in the code.

But for the NRL it is an abject failure.

Parramatta coach Ricky Stuart spoke for the first time yesterday about Folau's decision to backflip on the deal.

Folau telephoned Stuart back in September to outline how miserable he was playing AFL with the GWS Giants and explain why he wanted to return to rugby league.

The former Queensland State of Origin and Test centre even went so far as to suggest his return to the NRL wasn't entirely driven by money, but a desire to play alongside his mates like Jarryd Hayne and Tim Mannah.

Stuart is now questioning Folau's ethics after the developments of the past 48 hours.

"I'd rather know today about the dishonorable characteristics of Israel than pay him all the money that we tried to secure over the past eight weeks, then find out about the way he operates," Stuart said.

"I know it's an easy throwaway line, but success is built on culture and our club is plus one in culture by not having Israel."

Power-brokers at NRL headquarters, headed by the interim chief executive Shane Mattiske and salary-cap auditor Ian Schubert, will be red-faced over the latest developments and Folau's potential move to Super rugby.

Folau arranged a meeting with Mattiske before he quit the AFL to signal his desire to return to league and a deal should have been stitched-up the day after he finished his GWS Giants commitments.

But the Eels deal was blocked by salary-cap auditor Schubert, who refused to allow Parramatta to register a contract for next season for anything less than $400,000.

i knew he was looking at rugby...i wonder if it's another 'lifelong dream' to play rugby union like it was to play afl...quite the mercenary isn't he, dumb as a ****-carters horse, but a mercenary all the same...
 
Promising Kiwi prop James Gavet has apparently been released by the Bulldogs due to disciplinary reasons & is talking to 4 NRL clubs including the Tigers.
 
It's not that. I just don't know what team he's going to play in since they've got 4 first grade sides now.
 
Competition for spots can be a good thing. Cleary got the Warriors to grand finals in all three grades with that in 2011, and I'm sure he's got the same plan at Penrith.
 
The Warriors had about 10% of the quality of depth the Panthers have now so I don't see how it's the same. They must have absolutely no juniors if they have to have 100 first grade players at the club.
