Dylan Lucas discussion

He should absolutely be captain.
I have a bit of info on Lucas, none of it really groundbreaking but still worth knowing if ya’ll haven’t read or heard about it. He’s a footyhead, grew up watching and loving the game his whole life - still watches every game (unlike KP). His family are footy mad, all he ever wanted was to be an NRL player.
He’s also become THE dominant voice at training (this shouldn’t surprise people if you see him on the field or if you’ve been to games - he is often the one talking in huddles).
And apparently he is basically insane as a trainer. The coaching staff virtually have to stop him from killing himself because he throws everything at every training session and is always doing extras.
The contact is at the club and is very close to the playing group.
I’ve never met him, I’ve seen him interviewed briefly - there’s very likely people on this forum who have more info on this point either through people they know or their own interactions with him BUT apparently he is also a really great, down-to-earth guy and is very well liked at the club. By the staff, the senior playing group and the juniors.
I hate throwing “speculation” out there that I can’t verify (this person knows I’m on the forum and has directly told me to say as little about them that could identify them as possible), but I had to share this because to me - this is the making of not only a great player… but a long-term captain.
So yeah, do with this info as you please - it’s at least interesting.

I sit behind our bench at home games, often first graders are mingling around while cup is playing, and naturally get harrased by young kids the whole time for photos and autographs, lucas is by far the most enthusiastic with the kids and engages with them more than any other player. Only a small thing but its evident he knows how special that can be for kids and puts in the effort.

I want results (obviously), but probably more importantly I want a team I’m proud to support. My favourite ever knights player is Danny Buderus. He had everything I wanted as a lifelong supporter. He threw his body into every tackle, every play. Off the field, an absolute class act. Every person I know who has met him or spent considerable time with him all say the same thing - a genuine, down-to-earth, decent guy.
I’ll never forget, when I was 16 years old working at the stadium I used to see the players arrive early before fans flocked them and before they went into the sheds.
This one game, the players arrived and got swamped by about 20 fans or so. They spoke to them briefly, and then jogged off. Bedsy was the last to leave talking to fans, and he was being called by a guy to get into the sheds and the last couple of people leave an it was literally just me watching from a stairway and about 3 old ladies walk past. And Buderus is jogging to the sheds and one of the old women calls out “I love you Danny!” And he stops mid run, turns around and runs back with a big smile on his face and hugs her, gives her a kiss on the cheek and says “aww thank you darling! I hope me and the boys make you proud today!” And then jogs back off on to the field. No cameras, no crowd.
It was at that moment that I questioned my heterosexuality 🤣 🤣

Whilst I admire Lucas as a player and his overall ability and obvious leadership qualities his time as Captain will come. Might not happen for a season or two while we have the more senior types such as Ponga, Frizell and Gagai still with us but I am sure it will happen.
I have no doubt Captaincy is an aim but let him further develop and take over when he is more established and prepared for the extra work/duties required but first of let’s make sure he is with us till he retires.

And Chief is exactly the same, a real gentleman in my family’s experience.

Yep, can confirm from multiple encounters and people who grew up with him and are still close to him and his brother.
Gagai is another guy who’s a great fella off the field.

It’s crazy to think he’s only 35 games in.
I really hope he stays fit and has a long, successful career.
Does anyone have any info on what he was like as a junior coming through? I know he played wing and centre and seemed pretty quick. That’s all though. Did he make the junior rep sides?

It's a shame NSW has such talent in their back row, Lucas could have been a bit of a bolter if a few injuries or poor form arises.

But definitely one to look at in future years if he continues on this same trajectory.

He's got the same issue as Bradman Best, Origin calibre player in a position the Blues have a ****load of depth in. They'd both walk into the Queensland team.
