Darius Boyd

If someone said "Hi mate" to me and I didn't know them, I wouldn't even think they were talking to me.

If a player doesn't want to be harrassed in their personal life then there's nothing wrong with that.

Yeah bugger the fans that are responsible for their big money contracts aye?

If they don't want to be a public commodity grab a 9-5 job and the wage that goes with it.

When your a NRL star you are a public figure and should conduct yourself accordingly goes with the terrority.

It's hard to compare yourself with a famous League star sorry James! Lol

He gets paid to play league, not go round saying hello to every Tom **** and Harry in his spare time.

In my head, I'm a star.

A forum member said the highlight of the last home game was running into Boyd in the car park a having a photo taken. If he's playing good footy and treating fans with respect in person he can bare his ar*e to the cameras for all I care.

Haha that was me mate, it's always been known Darius isn't a fan of talking to the media and isn't very out there he kinda just lets his footy speak for itself. After meeting him at that game though i've grown to love the bloke even more he shook my hand, we had a quick chat about the game, got a good photo with him said have a good one & it was a great start to the night. So long as he keeps playing the way he does who cares about the media, bunch of pr!cks anyway I don't blame him for not liking them.

His paid to play league yes. Like with any employee his paid to represent his employer which is the NRL and Newcastle Knights, protecting that brand involves being friendly and approachable in public, same with any employee that is a public figure.

And like any employee there is a time of the day/week when he clocks off. Away from his Knights/NRL/Sponsors/Fans obligations Boyd and every other NRL player are entitled to a little "Me time". I live around the corner from Uate. I see him regularly at Mt Hutton Coles. Every now and then someone asks for a photo or whatever and he obliges. Most of the time he's barefoot, dressed like a dag and seems to be enjoying the fact that he can go about his business without fanfare.

I don't get the fascination with going up to a sports star who doesn't know you from a bar of soap just to prove what a fanboy you are. Walk a day in Boyd's shoes before you criticise. He probably gets an equal ratio of abuse to friendly greetings especially in Newcastle. I sometimes get an attitude being at waratah villiage wandering amongst the "look at all my cool tatts" newy locals and can easily see why he would want to keep to himself. I'm starting to feel it coming on just typing this.

I've read one person out of this whole thread say he said hi to him and got brushed... In a public place like a supermarket. He probably didn't even hear him.

As for what you said Beaumont about Mullen, I've never heard anyone say they hated him, so I find that quite bizarre. (That majority do)

Check out the Newy Herald comments section on their website, Mullen gets bagged out constantly.

Or like me, was deep in concentration, walking up and down trying to guess which isle they put the paper towels in this week

Alicia - do you live in Newcastle ? During the Wicks saga Mullen's name was dragged through the mud from one end of town to the other. More recent example. 2 houses across the road full of Knight's members. After the Dragons loss I'm greeted with the call when are we going to get rid of Mullen. I can see the validity in that question given that he lost us the game against St George(yeah right). After he had a blinder a couple of weeks ago it was he went alright but he'll never get picked for Origin. Not only do I think Mullen is a very good player I feel sorry for him to a degree.

Example?

If you're going off the Newcastle Herald website, they are trolls who don't even support the Knights.

Match reports on there when we lose, any article which mentions Mullen ...

I can't actually find Beaumont's original comment, was it in another thread? But from what I remember he was talking about the general public rather than people on here, which is why I mentioned it. The gist is - he isn't super popular in Newcastle.

Edit: oh, too slow, Beaumont pretty much said what I was trying to say.

Every player who plays in the halves for Newcastle cops it because they aren't Joey.

Mullen is an absolute star who has been brilliant for us since he was 16 years old. He is the most capped junior player wevé ever had, playing for Aus schoolboys 2 years in a row and all the junior rep sides. He pretty much took combined catholic schools to the title with a solo effort. He won an SG Ball title for us, and the only reason he didn't win an under 20s title is that he was in firstgrade by then.

In the seniors he wasn't ready to take over from Joey as a teenager, and we just haven't had a competitive side since then, so he hasn't had a chance to shine.

Joey could take a bunch of nuffies and make them look like world beaters. Mullen can't do that, and neither can Thurston, Marshall, or anyone else in the game today, but Knights fans demand that a player in the halves should be able to win a game single handed or we won't support them - which of course means we'll never give much 'love' to anyone with a 7 or a 6 on their backs.

Mullen has been one of my favourite Knights for a long while now..... But I've still been frustrated after a loss and bagged him lol
