Idris leaves Bulldogs for Gold Coast

Bennett would not be interested in joining a club where all the signing decisions have been made for him.

He didn't seem to mind at the Dragons ... who did he bring in? nobody that I can think of, particularly in his first year.

I never thought it would turn out this way with Tinkler having such a negative impact on the clubs recruitment. Like all Knights fans I expected him to be able influence a deal getting over the line but not to take recruitment into his own hands. Snowden & Idris are good players but there are not great players and both have their flaws. Rick Stone should be spearheading the recruitment and then calling in Tinkler to get the deal over the line.

Has Tinkler even thought about the salary cap?? If we sign Idris (who we don't need) then depending on where he plays (second row & centres) we will have to lose someone out of our current roster and it won't be fringe players like Steve southern or shannon Mcdonnell or low paid players like Adam McDougall it will be a quality player to cover Idris's salary.

Tinkler should be in talks with Stone about the recruitment strategy so everyone is on the same page. Who would you prefer Jamal Idris or Tom Learoyd Lahrs???

The one thing Brian Smith done when he was here was bridge the gap between our best players and our fringe players, he didn't believe in the one marquee player because that meant he had to settle with 3-4 lowly paid players. I don't mind having the one marquee player but look at the Cowboys as an example with JT the second he is injured or off the field they get hammered and it was the same with us when we had Joey. Smith changed that when he took over the club and now the results of our football team don't rest on one player like the Cowboys (JT) & Eels (Hayne). Is Jamal Idris worth unsettling the balance of our squad?

Tinkler should be offering Kurt Gidley a big salary first as he is the heart and soul of this football team.

Once more for good luck, this offer is from the Knights, not Tinkler.

We've had this discussion when Idris's name came up a few months ago, but I'm definitely in favour of signing him. For such a young player with so much improvement in him, he's absolutely worth getting to our club.

Who did Bennett bring to the Dragons? Boyd, Smith (although he had be rumoured the year before), Weyman, Priddis, Costigan, Emmett and Fien in 2009. And Goodwin, Greenfield, Bosden, Tagive, Gasnier in 2010. And has added Cuthbertson, and a couple of younger guys for 2011.

You know for a fact Bennett would have been instrumental in the signings of Boyd, Emmett, Priddis and Costigan after coaching them at the Broncos.

Want does stike me as interesting though, is that Bennett recruitment as the Dragons draws so many parallels with Smiths here at the Knights for 2008.

Apart from Jeremy Smith and Gasnier (whose history at the club was a major contributor to him signing) he hasnt signed any big names. Just guys looking for a go, like Weyman, Fein, Costigan. Just like Smith did with Taia, Housten, Hilder, Sau, Fa'aso etc. He has turned them from first graders into rep quality players.

Thats why Tinklers recruiting intentions dont seem like something Bennett would approve of. But then again, Souths and Crowes are 10x worse, and they are the favourites of getting him.

Bennett would be out of his mind to sign with the Rabbitohs, their halves are close to the worst in the comp even with their strong forward pack.

Sandow's biggest flaw is his defence, similar to Soward. Bennett would be able to minimise the impact his defensive mishaps have on the games.

And everyone knows Sutton has the talent, just needs the consistency.

More than I remembered for 2009, but still not a massive amount. Fien was mid-season, Costigan down and out, Weyman similar, and Priddis on his last legs (and playing reserve grade at the time, from what I remember).

Yeh, exactly. Players who no other teams wanted. Similar to Brian Smith recruitment at Newcastle. Guys who he would have got on the cheap and got them playing at a level twice what their paychecks would have suggested.

Can't see even Bennett turning guys like Idris or Snowden into guys who will perform above the contracts they are being offered.

True, but I can't see him being disappointed we've signed them either.

He did get one or two big names during his time at Brisbane ... plus Gasnier's return to the Dragons.

I dont think we will be able to afford to much if Idris signs, the Snowden thing works out and I would dare say Gidley would be getting a fair slice of this salary cap when he re-signs.

well they must know sau is leaving coz burro said they will need a class centre to replace doogs and sau so hes either leaving or there not offering him another contract which seems crazy as in 2 years hes gone from a $10,000 player to an international centre in the world champion kiwi side

Kurts deal is apparently wrapped up.

The amount in which Kurt will be paid for his next contract will greatly depend on the signing of Kade Snowden & Jamal Idris. If Newcastle insult Kurt with a figure that is to small due to salary cap restrictions not even loyalty will keep him.

We already have two marquee players in the team though, Gidley and Uate. Personally, I would rather keep Macdougall as opposed to getting Idris.

Newcastle don't have a marquee player. Kurt Gidley is by far the most important and best player but he certainly doesn't earn the amount of money that Jared Hayne & Johnathon Thurston do, which is great because it doesn't put extreme pressure on the salary cap and you are able to continue to throw decent contracts at valuable players such as Matt Hilder and not lose them to England.

1. Maybe Tinkler is not of the belief Stone will be there next year? Because when he gains control of the club, Stone won't be there. It has already been reported that Tinkler is after a big name coach.

2. I will be extremely surprised if Southern and McDonnell get contract extensions. We know Adam will retire.

1. Regardless even Russell Crowe consults his coaching staff before approaching players and abides by the salary cap.

2. You may have misinterpreted my post, we won't cover the cost of Snowden or Idris through the loss of fringe players or low paid players (Southern, McDonnell, McDougall) we will be forced to part with a decent player to relieve salary cap tension.

Burraston has come out in the media today and denied any involvement with Jamal Idris. They may be looking at him as a potential target to replace Mad Dog but nothing like what Idris has been offerred by Tinkler. It wouldn't be a straight swap for McDougall anyway, in financial terms it would more likely be McDougall, Sau & Southern for Idris.. Which simply unbalances the squad.

oh good thats what we need a new second rower lol!

My thoughts exactly mate lol. Tom Learoyd Lahrs or Jamal Idris.. Hmm thats a tough one

Under the current Cap we can pay Gidley up to 300k for the long serving player allowance. Im not sure if there is anyone else in the team that even qualifies, maybe only Jarrod Mullen and Dan Tolar. So Gidley could have half his contract paid in that.

**** I hope we don't get Idris, he's too slow, can't tackle and is far too lazy. I admit he's only in his early 20s but he needs to develop more to his game than being tall and having dreadlocks for me to take him seriously.

well Idris will wind up in the back-row permanently so that will leave a centre spot to be filled...

Yea, thats what I reckon aswell.

Canterbury didnt buy Jono Wright to play NSW Cup & even had reggies like Daniel Rauicava & Shane Nuemann in the centres last year

They also bought Pritchard and Eastwood.

I swear i heard somewhere he was going to be a FT centre this season. But i think that was in the papers, and Fantasy related, but still, they must have got their info somewhere.

Yeah, you are right.

Thats why talks broke down with Snowden, they couldnt afford his asking price.. They said they'd have to get rid of 2-3 players to accomodate him.

Not sure where the Idris hate is coming from. Would love to see him wearing the red and blue personally. Think he's a great young player with huge potential. At 20 years of age he's already a household name and a borderline marquee player. Who knows how good this guy could be? In 2-3 years time I can see him being one of the premier players in the game. I think he can be that good. I'm all for bringing Idris to Newcastle.
