4 them to buy likiliki and idris sau most have told them hes going somewhere else i hope not though as id like to see liki liki outside sau and uate outside idris with gids at fullback and mullo 1/2 and henry 5/8 now thats a backline to be feared

From what I can see Idris and SKD are the only two big name centres coming off contract this year.

I'd be happy with either ;)

So the point in signing Likiliki was... ?

I see Idris as a better fit in the second row anyway, meaning Sau and Likiliki would most likely be the centres post Maddog.

I don't understand why there would be no point in signing likiliki if we baught idris..

Likiliki is playing like **** and would do an average job compared to idris who is one year his junior

Likiliki is backup material compared to what our current standards are. Considering we picked him up cheap it makes no sense to argue that we shouldnt go in search of a marque centre because it would then make our decision to sign him a waste.. What?

You make a good point Mark. We are all so caught up in guys like Henry's and Likiliki's potential but disregard Idris' who is even younger? It doesn't make sense to me.

No question they're all in for big things but obviously Idris is going to get there alot faster than our young fellas. We'd be mad not to throw a generous offer his way.

Although I would love for a dynamo like Idris or SKD in our team...i'm not sure how that will go for our cap space. I do think he'd be really good inside Jimmy Mac, because his defensive inadequecies will be compensated for and he won't really need to pass the ball for other than to finish off a try or a line break. Mac isn't a winger that creates something out of nothing.

Don't know if the cap is going up considerably in 2013, the deals fit in perfectly otherwise, and its a good chance to get rid of some deadwood before then. $350k will feel like 250k and it will look like an ok deal by then if it happens and if he becomes a better player.

You dont win premierships in this day and age with that kind of narrow mindedness.

If your going to win premierships with the majority of the side made up of local talent, like we did in 97 and 01, they have to come up through the junior ranks, not get let go from the club and brought back at twice the price.

I'm just hoping Tinkler doesn't ignore some of our best players, just because they were imports and not 'locals'. Someone like Taia would be a tragedy to see let go.

I'll assume for now Tinkler is smarter then that, but all of his comments of bringing back the locals, is a concern. If the local isn't what we need, or isn't better then a different player on the market, or what we already have, then obviously not signing the local is a better option.

Would hate to see a clean out

IMO Theres two ways he could be thinking on the subject of going after the 'locals'.

1. The Brian Smith saga is fresh in his memory. There were a lot of disgruntled, so called 'fans', who were turned off the team under the Smith cleanout. Tinkler may be trying to attract these fans back.

or 2. Tinkler has the same mindset of these fans and is really going after a 100% local team.

Im hoping its the former.

Likiliki is playing like crap? What the hell are you on about? He played NYC last year for the Warriors and was one of the best centres in the competition. I highly doubt you know how much we picked him up for either, but yes it would've been relatively cheap seeing as though he's a young inexperienced player who's pretty much all potential atm.

Oh and FWIW, I'm all for signing Idris regardless of who's in the centres, be it Likiliki, Sau, or Maddog. Idris is a great talent, better then the aforementioned, and besides, his future lies as a second rower anyway IMO.

I'm not sure who this is directed at but the majority of posters on this forum don't want Idris not because of Likiliki but because they don't rate the bloke, well not enough to pay him $350k a season anyway.

I'm definately on the other side of the fence though. Idris is one of the best young talents we have in the game. If Newcastle can snatch him up it would be a great buy IMO.

Likiliki was signed cheap for 2 years but is an amazing prospect and should be given a chance, he has alot of raw potential and can only get better, being named in the 2009 & 2010 Toyota Cup Team of the Year, played 1 NRL game for the Warriors, played in the winning 2010 Warriors Toyota Cup Premiership team, represented Tonga in 2009 Pacific Cup and also played for the 2010 Junior Kiwis. He has played against some big names and does have some defensive issues but with ball in hand hes a wrecking ball.
