Bedsy to make Leeds Debut

FORMER NSW captain Danny Buderus will make a shock return from biceps surgery and debut for Leeds on Friday night, coach Brian McClennan has revealed.

Hooker Buderus, whose Newcastle career ended prematurely when he suffered the injury in August, was expected to be racing the clock to be fit for the World Club Challenge on March 1.

"The good news is that Bedsy will be playing this weekend,'' McClennan said. "We were looking at the Hull KR game but he is right to come back a week early. He has settled in really well here and it is great news with the World Club Challenge in mind.''

Leeds host Wakefield in their second Super league match of the season. The defending world champions have a host of injury concerns with England star Rob Burrow (back) under a cloud and New Zealand fullback Brent Webb still sideline by a similar but much more serious problem.

But McClennan said the continuing delays in former Brisbane and New Zealand forward Greg Eastwood getting his UK passport were causing him big headaches. "It is really affecting our preparation for the World Club Challenge,'' McClennan said.

"We have MPs and immigration lawyers following it and all we keep hearing from Canberra is 'wait ... we'll send an email'. There is no indication of when. Even when we do get the green light, it could be a day or two before he gets on a plane and then another day to get here and then we have to test him to see how fit he is.

"He has been training but we won't know if he is ready to play against Manly in the back row until we see him ourselves. It's a real pain.''

Eastwood travelling under his New Zealand passport and playing as an import was not an option under British immigration law, McClennan said, even though this would not breach Super League regulations.

Thanks for that PK. I really feel for the guy, he's missed out on some big games because of that back. And he's been through some tough times apart from that, as well.

Bedsy off to a winning start

AUSSIE superstar Danny Buderus made a winning start for the champions to leave the Cats licking their wounds.

But it was another gutsy effort by patched-up Wakefield who were never outclassed with Leeds struggling to find their title touch.

Buderus, snapped up from Newcastle Knights, made his Leeds debut after six months out following a bicep operation.

The ex-Kangaroo skipper, 31, stepped off the bench after 25 minutes with the Rhinos already ahead 12-2.

Buderus provided the pass for Ian Kirke to seal an uninspiring win in the 74th minute but Leeds will need a massive improvement to beat Manly in the World Club showdown in a fortnight.

Buderus admitted: "The monkey’s off my back. I’m not superstitious but it is Friday the 13th and I was coming back from a serious injury!

“I was able to shake off a bit of rust and it was a strong effort from the boys.”

Rhinos skipper Kevin Sinfield missed his first match through injury for almost three years, with Leeds also without Brent Webb, Keith Senior and Rob Burrow.

But Wakefield were even more depleted with 10 regulars ruled out and then Ryan Atkins sin-binned just before the break.

The Rhinos led 12-2 at half-time with mistakes by Dave Halley and Matt Blaymire handing Leeds the initiative.

Halley’s error led to Ali Lauitiiti charging over after two minutes and then Blaymire failed to gather Lee Smith’s kick with Jamie Jones-Buchanan romping over.

Smith added both conversions but Leeds could not make the extra man pay, with Tony Martin even slotting over a second penalty to cut the gap to 12-4.

Danny Allan should have made the game safe for Leeds before Kirke went over to seal a scrappy win.

Wakefield coach John Kear said: "We showed spirit, determination and desire in bucketfuls but Leeds' goal-line defence was exceptional. There were lots of positives for both teams.”

Great hunting AK! I love the long sleeves he's wearing in that game ... bring back the long sleeves to the NRL!!! haha.

Bedsy rested last night in advance of next week's WCC game. Leeds still won last night HKR 10 - 19 Leeds. Ryan Bailey stretchered off after being knocked unconscious in a tackle by Briscoe.

Yeh - that sucks for him :'(

LEEDS' hopes of becoming the first team to successfully defend rugby league's world club title have received a significant blow with Danny Buderus not expected to be fit for Sunday's clash with Manly.

Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler, speaking after Sunday's 34-26 warm-up win over Harlequins in London, suggested Super League champions Leeds were foxing over their injury long list and that hooker Buderus had been "rested" from last Friday's brutal game against Hull KR.

But Buderus, 31, visited a doctor for knee scans late on Monday and the club believes he'll be unable to play in Sunday's World Club Challenge clash with NRL champions Manly at Elland Road.

"We won't get the scans back for a day but to be perfectly honest, it doesn't look good for Danny," Leeds chief executive Gary Hetherington told AAP.

"Initial indications are that he has a problem with his cartilage in his knee, that it is a cartilage problem. Generally, that is a four-week injury.

"We have a number of injuries and that is just being honest. Rob Burrow (back) is looking very doubtful as well."

Other Leeds casualties include second rower Ali Lauitiiti (hamstring), second rower Carl Ablett (niggling injuries) prop Ryan Bailey and utility back Lee Smith (both concussion).

Hasler said after the Eagles' first game since the 2008 grand final: They tell us they've got eight injured, eight won't play. We've been down that road before so well see.

"We'll assess that when we get up there but I think they'll have a full complement.

"I notice Danny Buderus didn't play (on Friday), the young halfback Rob Burrow didn't play, so I would imagine they were resting them."

Hetherington denied any gamesmanship while Leeds five-eighth Danny McGuire told the Press Association: "We're struggling at the minute.

"It's hard to know what to put it down to because our conditioners and physios are probably the best in the game and really look after our bodies and make sure we are doing the right things.

"It would have been nice to get all our players out there but, if we lose or don't perform, we won't be using it as an excuse." The Rhinos trained twice on Monday before Buderus visited a specialist.

Manly recovered from their comeback win over Quins with a swim at their Richmond base before a five-hour bus journey to their new camp at the Leeds Marriott. Hasler gave his men the afternoon off.

Despite a few missing stars on both sides - Manly's Brent Kite and Tony Williams did not make the trip to the UK - Rugby Football League officials are confident of another 30,000-plus crowd at Elland Road on Sunday evening.

Buderus ruled out of Carnegie World Club Challenge

Former Australian captain Danny Buderus has been ruled out of this Sunday's Carnegie World Club Challenge for Leeds Rhinos against Manly Sea Eagles after scans revealed he will require an arthroscopy on his knee.

Buderus will have the operation on Thursday and is expected to be out of action for four to six weeks. Commenting on the injury, Head Coach Brian McClennan said, “He suffered a tear to his knee cartilage in the game against Wakefield a fortnight ago and the opinion of the surgeon is to have the operation as soon as possible so he can begin rehabilitation straight away.

It is disappointing for Danny because he is so keen to make his mark at the club however that will be on hold now for a month. It is a routine operation and there was no point risking further damage and it would be unrealistic to expect him to battle on.

“We are fortunate that we have another world class hooker in Matt Diskin, who has carried on where he left off last season with a great start to this campaign.

We are very confident in that area of our team going forward, not just for Sunday’s game against Manly but the games in the following weeks as well,” added McClennan.
