YOUNG Newcastle playmaker Ryan Stig is in demand from a number of NRL clubs - but South Sydney denies it is one of them.
The Rabbitohs, who lose Chris Sandow to Parramatta next year, have been linked to the 21-year-old half-five eighth however CEO Shane Richardson denies the club has expressed any interest in the young gun.
“No, we’ve got a few up our sleeve and he’s not one of them,” Richardson told
Sportsnewsfirst.com.au when asked whether they were pursuing him.
The Rabbitohs are set to replace Sandow with Adam Reynolds, a crafty halfback who represented the Rabbitohs in the 2010 Toyota Cup grand final.
Reynolds tore the ACL in his knee in the pre-season and was forced to have a knee reconstruction.
Insiders at the Rabbitohs told
Sportsnewsfirst.com.au that Reynolds will be the likely first choice for next season under incoming coach Michael Maguire.
“The only half I have heard mentioned is Adam Reynolds,” the insider said.
“I haven’t heard anyone else being talked about.”
Having secured former Test winger Matt King for next season, CEO Richardson said the clubs has not yet finished with its recruitment.
“We’ve got a few up our sleeve,” he said when asked whether the club would be pursuing more signings for 2012.
With Stig not in the Rabbitohs plans, it remains uncertain where he will play next season.
Off contract at the end of the year and with the club having already secured another young half in Tyrone Roberts, Stig may have to leave the Knights in order to secure a starting spot.
A Newcastle junior, Stig left the club in 2010 to join the Cowboy however after he was unable to get a run, returned to the knights this year and has played five games in the top grade so far.
Stig's manager declined to comment on where his client is at with negotiations.
