Toohey's News

1/10

Toohey gives credit to AOB for blooding some of the young players we’re now seeing thriving as well as some tactical decisions (Ponga captaining, Sharpe five-eighth move). AOB says he’ll be supporting the Knights this week.

Justin Holbrook was the runner-up for the Knights head coaching job in 2016, narrowly overlooked for Nathan Brown due to his lack of experience.

Toohey booked a trip abroad starting in September not expecting the Knights to still be playing, so he’s missing all the fun after 25 years.

Think Baz has lost the plot . There is absolutely no resemblance to knights I have watched for the past couple of years . If Obi was still here , we don't make the eight

Yeah don’t agree much with Mr Toohey here, don’t think now is the time to heap any praise AOB. I do think initially AOB did instill better defensive systems, and good defensive resolve that was lacking. He would’ve brought Phoenix through as well. But Sharpe was always going to be a first grader, and Ponga eventually captain.
Holbrook has actually coached us. He’s found the best strengths of individual players, and planned the style of play to what he’s got. Actually put together some game plans as well. Which is the big criticism of AOBs boring one out run, and hope ponga does something style of play and game plans.

I haven’t read the full article but there were some good things AOB brought to the club. However it was 💯 time for him to go, I’d even argue he should have gone earlier in hindsight but there is zero point being negative or angry about him now. We cannot change the past.

He is backing our boys, no point putting the boot in. I’m sure he has his own regrets especially with seeing how good the club is thriving and our young guns finally succeeding. Maybe he would have done things differently.

He did get us tracking further in the right direction.

Holbrook is the right fit at the right time for this club and the current players. I’m still thrilled we are in the GF. I was realistically hoping for the top 8 and maybe one finals win.

I’m still pinching myself we are in the GF

Lol Toohey has always been an AOB backer. Laughable time to be bringing him up, honestly. I don't think the guy's tenure here was awful or anything but this has little to do with him.

The article is a reasonably balanced assessment of AOB’s legacy.

Toohey does say AOB’s inability to change brought about his downfall and the players were tired of not been able to express themselves in attack which lead to our dismal results last year.

I believe Crouch should have been given his first grade debut last year.

I dunno what it is with Toohey he is always trying to put a shinning light on AOB.
He will not get another crack at a head coaching job in the NRL. Because, he isnt a head coach.
It should be the opposite, questions asked and WTF was he doing all that time...

Titans experience plus long apprenticeship at the Roosters, night and day difference to who we have now.
Agree, he has a decade's more experience as a coach now, things have worked out for the best. If we'd hired him back then it might have worked out much the same as it did for him at the Titans.

And just one other thing on AOB, he slotted Crossland in at hooker when most on here were not fans, now he's arguably the heart of the team in that role.

Now doubt, but he still couldn't have been worse than Nathan Brown. Pretty sure he wouldn't have walked in the door and basically guaranteed a wooden spoon right from the start and proceed to win only one game. That was inexcusable, the fact that he wasn't fired after yet another wooden spoon in 2017, still baffles me

Your forgetting Nathan Brown's context, Bennett left us a flaming wreck after the tinkler era, our cap was hilariously bad overpaying people like the Sims is my favourite example.

He basically had to torch us with Mooney and rebuild using never was's and young kids. (Josh Starling and Brock Lamb as examples.).

He even said early on he would never be there to see the success and when O'Brien came in he was given a competitive roster.

I don't think fans like accepting defeat before a ball is kicked off, but I believe they were saying the second year he was there they were projected to be something like $600-700k over the cap? Don't know how they happens. But also (and I'm pretty sure it was mentioned here) Mooney was saying the overinflated contracts too, players on money they shouldn't have been on. Then you're forced to get rid of a few guys.
